The Great Fairy Circle
Deep in the heart of Hidden Springs State Park is a huge ring of mushrooms, nearly forty feet across. The fairy circle is made up of several species of mushroom, mostly from the Hydnellum genus, also known as bleeding tooth mushrooms. The bright white mushrooms and their blood-red globules are said to shine in the moonlight, equally inviting and ominous to those who have strayed from the established paths of the park.
This ring of mushrooms has been a local legend for decades, perhaps even longer. People say the park rangers know where it is, and that they intentionally make all their trails curve away from it. They also say that sometimes members of the fair folk are able to slip out, and that they and their mischief are the cause of the strange aura around the town. They warn that you should avoid taking any unmarked trails, especially if you have already been lost for a while, lest it be a path made to lure you to the fairy circle.
