The Granite Quarry

A cold, harsh presence lies here, a gray blight in the forest outside of town. It matches the old quarry that it lingers over. The exposed granite has been used since ancient times, when indigenous tribes would skirt around the region as much as they could. Stones taken from here made efficient axes and deadly arrowheads, seeming almost eager for a kill. Local explorers have found piles of these ancient tools sealed into tree hollows and random cave pockets, walled off with hardened mud and each accompanied by a lone skeleton, also sealed within.   When Red Oak Bluffs was being built, the quarry was opened to gather building materials. The old stone is present throughout the town, used for foundations, pathways, and flooring of historic buildings. Even now, granite slabs are taken for countertops and fireplaces, while crushed pieces are used when making roads. Active work at the granite scar is slow now, only re-opened when a large project calls for the stone. Its semi-abandoned nature makes it a common spot to do some target practice or have discreet parties.
