Late Night Radio Host

In a town like Red Oak Bluffs, sometimes the worst possible thing is silence. Working late can feel dangerous, as if the quiet is malicious- the shroud of something evil out to hunt. When most of the people drift off to sleep, there are always some who need a bit of noise to stave off the feeling of the pitch-black forest closing in. For the town, the oasis of respite comes from the late night hosts of the local radio station, KNTC. With soothing voices, the hosts ease the unnerving silence, providing relief to the night owls in town and on the road. The topics of discussion vary from night to night, but often the hosts tend to veer into the philosophical and spiritual realms of discussion. Being able to look out the window to gaze upon the stars and the quiet solitude over the town lend themselves well to soliloquies that fill the silent void.

Career

Qualifications

The only real qualifications for a late night radio host are the ability to talk nonstop for an hour or more, a good radio voice, and a strong night owl energy. Experience in operating the radio equipment is preferred, but KNTC is more than willing to train a promising host.

Career Progression

Typically, the late night hosts begin work during the day at the radio station. There, they assist the daytime duties and learn the ins and outs of the array of equipment needed to run a show. During the night shift, the station has little support, so the night hosts must be trained until they are fairly self-sufficient.

Perception

Social Status

Although the late night hosts have a smaller audience, they are highly respected in town. This respect is not often professed aloud, and sometimes it is given only grudgingly, but everyone knows the importance of having someone broadcasting through the night.

Operations

Dangers & Hazards

One of the hazards of taking the night shift at the radio station is burnout from taking the phone calls. The station serves as one of the quickest ways to spread important news, taking in information from the callers. Most of the time, the calls are simply phone calls. Quiet in the town drives people to need to talk. Sometimes, though, people call in to KNTC in desperation. Between ragged gasps of fear, a caller tries to explain their dire situation. The hosts must try to get all this information in and clarified for emergency services or a ranger. Often, the call is nothing in the end. Panic attacks are unusually common in Red Oak Bluffs, after all, and it amounts to nothing but a sheepish caller in the morning. But other times, the call is cut short, between breaths or mid-word. These calls are logged, and a copy is given to the ranger station. After several years of hosting, these calls can get under the skin of a night DJ. For this reason, a clause tucked away deep in the employment contract provides tax-funded therapy for late night radio hosts of KNTC.
