Arcana Dragonflight

History

The Arcana flight is a splinter of the Dimensional Dragonflight. Though this splintering was informal, the first dragon to call themselves an arcana was not recorded until 14,986, after which point deserters of the dimensional flight began to call themselves arcanas enmass. The flight has no declared leader, instead functioning mainly as smaller familial flights distinct from others in their goals, culture, and territories.   It was initially believed the flight named themselves after the human loan word 'arcane' in reference to their preference to more broad magics, this is actually a common misconception. The flight's name actually is derived from a slang term in the dimensional flight's dialect of Dragontongue, 'ahkinna', meaning 'unwelcome' or 'stranger'. Most likely, the term started as a joke due to internal conflict within the Dimensional flight, leading to the self-exile of many of its members, who later founded the arcana flight.

Naming Traditions

Unisex names

Like their ancestors, the Dimensio Dragonflight, the Arcana Flight lacks names with distinct gender or sex markers. Unlike the dimensional flight they do not pass names down their family lines, instead often naming their members after critical components of magical processes, celestial bodies, or other such structures upon coming of age. Childhood names given by their parents do not hold much cultural significance in being known, contrary to many other flights.

Culture

Major language groups and dialects

Due to a more recent splintering from the Dimensional flight, the vast majority of the group's members still speak with a distinct dialect most similar to the dimensional dialect that can be hard for other flights to understand. Due to greater cultural exchange and thus loanwords and slang being used, several Arcana dialects have been proposed, though there is little consensus on which of these proposed dialects is the most widespread.

Common Etiquette rules

As with their ancestors, members of the flight are generally seen as reclusive and shy, though not as isolationist as the dimensional flight.
