Special Languages
- Ademetzi: All characters with at least one level in a spellcasting class learn this language. Originally created by the Hylian Goddess of Magic, it is used by arcane spellcasters to manifest magical effects and spells. It is a very complicated language, and it takes decades to master the dictionary alone. By making an Arcana check on an Ademetzi inscription, you can know exactly what it does. If you already have that spell or have encountered that effect, then you know the Ademetzi word for it. Non-Ademetzi speakers might not know exactly what it does, but a successful Arcana check means they might remember roughly what it does.
Common Languages
Languages you'd commonly see used, or are widely known for other purposes:- International - A widely spoken language first standardized by Tillenian merchants in 5470 2E, International's script combines elements of Northlander/Southlander Common, International Elvish, and Dwarfish. This, in addition to its simplistic script, makes it easy to read.
- Northlander Common - An international language combining the Chevelian and Jangaian languages.
- Southlander Common - Southlander Common is mostly made up of Scionian words with the occasional mix of local words thrown in.
- International Elvish - Paltian Elvish forms the grammatical base of IE with additional loan words from Sylvan and Aquan included.
- Dwarfish (Brevenni & Gnomish dialects) - The language of the Dwarffolk. This has intentionally changed little since their flight from their homeland of Thakantal. Dwarfish also has a whistled form, which allows them to easily communicate across large caverns.
- Goblin - The common language of Goblins, Hobgoblins, and Bugbears. There is a difference in dialect between Northern and Southern Goblinoids, but not enough for them to be considered different languages.
- Orcish - The common language of Orcs. This has barely evolved, as Orcs have mostly been confined to Hatorand.
Exotic Languages
Languages that are unknown to most of society, or are very rarely seen:- Abyssal - The language of demons.
- Brevenni Handtalk - Brevenni Handtalk was created by the Dwarves after coming into contact with Humans and Elves. Brevenni Handtalk can be used alongside spoken speech to communicate ideas. Handtalk is designed to be extremely subtle, and the ideas communicated can often be misinterpreted as normal body language by those not in the know.
- Celestial - The language of Angels and the Pneumanian Gods.
- Darkling - The language of Shadowspawn. It is very difficult for non-Shadowspawn to learn and speak, but those who do can understand and speak directly with their foul god.
- Deep Speech - The language of Aboleths.
- Draconic (Malbud, Yatiri) - Draconic was a language gifted to the Dragonfolk by the True Dragons early in Halaran's history. It has developed into two distinct dialects: Malbud, which is spoken by the Kobolds, and Yatiri, which is spoken by the Dragonborn. Draconic consists of spoken word with additional popping, squeaking, and hissing sounds. This, in addition to the importance of body language on the context of the message, makes it difficult for outsiders to learn Draconic.
- Halfling - Halfling is unrelated to any other language in Halaran, as it was developed while the race lived in the Starry Realm. Halflings do not share their language very often, although it is not necessarily a secret language.
- Infernal - The language of Devils
- Old Tongue - Old Tongue is the common language of ancient Humanity. The educated know a few words and phrases of Old Tongue, although a few scholars can speak it almost fluently.
- Primordial (Aquan, Auran, Ignan, Terran dialects) - The language of Elementals, some mortal races have learned a dialect due to their regular contact with these elementals.
- Sylvan - The language of nature, it is spoken by Hylian gods and natural beings.
- Undercommon - The language spoken by those who inhabit the Underdark.
