Sir Donovan Ulysses Klaus Edinborough IV, Professor of Arcane Archaeology aka "The Duke"

Due to some quick thinking, I helped save her from an arcane Death Ward that coulda spelt death for everyone including myself. Now an assistant professor to me, and is my accomplice to all expeditions and supplies needed for future digs and projects.   Ally 2: Reginald Edinborough II: Cousin of Donovan, works for the permit office at the Azorious Senate to help expeditious requests a little bit easier to acquire for my trips and expeditions.   Rival 1: Cassandra Lightgale: Well-off daughter Halfling daughter of a prominent Orzhov family, I left her at the altar when I was 70 as I could not marry her as it would ruin my sense of freedom and adventure that I yearn at all times.   Magic Item: A magic quill that documents everything said and all adventures I’ve taken part of for my eventual Auto-biography series that I plan to write.   Character Backstory:   Parents Occupations Donovan IV is the son of a prominent Azorious Senate family in the 8th District, his father Donovan III, is the Ravnica equivalent to a District Attorney and his Mother a prominent social figure within the Orzhov primarily working within the non-profit sector of the “so called” church.  

Personal History

Early Education

  Donovan IV was always fascinated by history and the unknown that surrounded Arcana. Although gifted with some arcane power at a young age it was never enough to become an Archmage or powerful Sorcerer, it was more utilized in supporting/buffing himself and that allowed him to start to take up fencing at a young age.   Excelling incredibly specifically with a Rapier, he became well established as a teenager at his Private Academy, not just for his elegance with a blade but his smarts and innate ability for discovery, history, and the arcane. He then enrolled at the University in District 8 on scholarship for Fencing where he earned a degree in Arcane Archaeology, further getting his Ravnica equivalent to a Doctorate’s in it. He then began doing odd jobs as a Research Assistant at the age of 24 just shortly after the Guild Wars started.  

Guild Wars for the Edinborough Family

  Over the years and as the war started to spread to every district, the Edinborough Family started taking their skills elsewhere. 15 years into the war, the presence of the guilds in the 8th District has greatly diminished and small sects started to pop up instead. Donovan's father became the de-facto leader of the 8th District using his influence and education to get himself ahead. His Mother was using the banking and skills she picked up from the Orzhov to help figure out how to make their section of the 8th District the best it could be. This went on for the rest of the Guild Wars until Jace became the living guildpact, at which point the Azorius Senate officially reclaimed governance of The 8th District.   During this time, it was often rumored that the Edinborough family became corrupt during the second half of the Guild Wars, handing out unjust punishments and laundering money around for what remained of the Orzhov Guild in District 8. Donovan was aware of these rumors and was distancing himself from the family in general and the arranged marriage to someone in the Orzhov was the final straw for Donovan during the Guild Wars  

Years 1-10 of Guild War

Taught at the University in District 8 as a scholar.  

Years 11-15

Explored the rubble belts looking for the lost city of Valtara coming up empty-handed  

Years 15-35

Continued to teach at the University again as the Guild Wars started to pick up, it was becoming apparent that he would eventually need to pick a side and could not self-sustain like this so he took a leave of absence and started experimenting with the local Izzet Chapter.  

Years 35-48

Using Izzet Research, he developed a type of radio that uses the specific frequency signature of the Arcane Leylines aptly named the Arcane Leyline Ultra-high Radio, or A.L.U.R. for short. While using this to help the Izzet with some of their war efforts and means of communication besides conventional spellcasting, Donovan discovered a frequency that was unknown to him and was distinct from any normal means of communication.   For my 69th birthday, I was informed that I would be having an arranged marriage one year later on my 70th birthday to an Orzhov Drow named Cassandra Nightgale. The night before my wedding I booked an overnight airship to District 10 to the Izzet at one of their larger headquarters, to put forth an expedition back to the city of Valtara and refocus my studies on discovering something there to help the war effort.  

Years 49-52

Took another expedition with the help of the A.L.U.R. in trying to find the lost city of Valtara, although taking me to a more accurate place of where the city should have been there was still nothing out there. What I did find though in the rubble belt outside of District 3 in an Arcane Vault was a Magic Quill and Notebook, this took me 3 years to open with careful research and the best minds of the Izzet League helping me in secret to open the many magical locks that existed just to open it.  

Arcane Scribe

This Magic Quill and Notebook was an Arcane Scribe which was not unheard of in some parts of academia. The key difference with this one was that it seemed to have a voice/mind of its own, calling itself Archmage Kallum. Upon discussion, he goes on to explain that he was entrapped in this book thousands of years ago as a part of a failed experiment to bring life to inanimate objects. He lived in the city of Valtara and did not realize that it had disappeared at all until he was told about it. He is now used as an advisor to Donovan, taking down notes in hopes that together they can help find the lost city of Valtara.  

Years 53-70

Donovan has been living out his latter years in District 10, helping the Izzet and Boros Legion maintain balance at the borders and go on covert missions against the Gruul Clans in an attempt to keep the peace and not bring about destruction of the city.  

Years 70- Present Day

Donovan has gone to teach at the University with the sight of the Guild Wars ending and once Jace becomes the living GuildPact he starts saving money and gaining research to present in hopes of gaining another expedition with his new found friend in Kallum. In the past year, Donovan has been working on a more miniaturized version of the A.L.U.R to help increase the pinpoint accuracy of the device as well as having an integrated Magic Radar.
