Natural Treasures of Marus

Overview

What is a Natural Treasure? This common question is found on the lips of children and newly Gifted across Marus. In the Realm of Seas, where power naturally coalesces, potent amalgamations of magical energy solidify into what are known as Natural Treasures. These vital components of the ecosystem's stability have become a natural facet of its wildlife's growth and development. They are the product of the world's natural cycles and form from patterns of significance; each will develop its own strengths and identity depending on the ambient powers that surround it and the histories that define it. Stability on the islands of Marus comes hand in hand with power, whether that be in the natural untamed world or the cut-throat civilizations of the Gifted.

My family has cultivated Jipsym Stalks in the Cloudtop Sea for many generations. We have learned the songs the stalks love most, prepared their rich soil, and tracked their slow growth. I would say there are very few Cultivators more prepared to raise a crop of these Earthen Treasures to Copper... and even fewer who could raise one to Tin.

A Coveted Resource

The Gifted of the Relic Arts covet Natural Treasures to fuel their magical advancement, absorbing them to build the sturdy foundation of their future growth. Their Paths to Power are defined by the treasures they absorb and thus the Primal Elements and fundamental forces over which they learn to develop a degree of control. The most powerful among the Gifted will use their cultivated powers as fuel to wield Marus' ancient Relics. At the same time, the civilized zones of the archipelagos similarly covet Natural Treasures to power their island defenses and protect their bustling cities. These powerful constructs consume entire fortunes in resources but facilitate the safe growth of whole populations from the monstrous threats that lurk in the seas.

Weighted Ranks

Natural Treasures, like the Gifted who use them, have an innate hierarchy of ranks that denotes the potency of their power. Though Natural Treasures may vary wildly in size or shape, their density and weight will remain proportional to their contained energy.

  • Copper Treasures begin as heavy as a cup of seawater, weighing less than a pound.
  •
  • Developing into Tin Treasures that are comparable to a pint of water weighing just over a pound.
  •
  • Bronze Treasures will weigh as much as a quart of seawater and are twice as heavy as lesser treasures.
  •
  • While Iron Treasures never grow heavier than a gallon of seawater and weigh the better part of ten pounds.
  •
  • All Steel Treasures are comparable to a cubic foot of water and weigh well over fifty pounds.
  •
  • While Gold Treasures are as colossal as a cubic meter of seawater and can weigh several thousand pounds.
