Zxo’lun

Pronunciation: ZO-lun

Map Index: H10

Location: On the coast in southwest Nhulokkarnum

Geography: Zxo’lun, a once-thriving peninsula in southwest Nhulokkarnum, now stands as a desolate wasteland, battered by the tumultuous events of the Great Cataclysm. The region's geography varies. Arid expanses of low sand dunes fill much the landscape. Jagged rocky hills that trace the southern extension of the Nhulokk Range sweep down into the duneland with their striped white and gray colors. Full of dull gray silt that blows in the wind, this area is known by sailors navigating its treacherous shores as the Gray Lands. The southernmost area, identified as the Horn of Zxo'lun by mariners, presents a danger to merchant ships due to its unforgiving rocky coastline and reputation of harboring monstrous creatures that prey on ships.

Climate: Enduring a sweltering tropical climate, Zxo’lun remains oppressively hot throughout the year, with scarce rainfall sustaining only the hardiest vegetation like drought-tolerant cacti. Frequent dust storms sweep across the landscape, reducing visibility and adding to the perilous nature of the terrain.

Wildlife: Little wildlife exists in this badly broken land. Only a few beetles, desert rats, and snakes survive in this foresaken terrain.

Humanoids: A population of Strix, winged humanoids with black skin and demonic looking features, lives in this forsaken land. As a type of chaos storm corrupted humanoid, they find themselves unwelcome and feared in civilized areas and must make their way in areas that humans fear to enter.

No other humanoids of any type live in Zxo'lun. Explorers who have set out to find what lies in this old land's interior seem to never return, the likely victims of the unspeakable horrors that stalk this land.

Monsters: Legends speak of the catastrophic magical events that occurred during the cataclysm. Wild temporal rifts tore open the boundaries between this plane and others, enabling fearsome extraplanar creatures the ability to cross into Zxo’lun. One of these, the legendary dreaded Terrasque, lurks near the southern tip of the Nhulokk Mountains. The Terrasque, said to be unkillable, is so vile that it has rendered the entire surrounding area unfit for life. In addition, large numbers of sand drakes, descendants of those who crossed the rift, now roam the ever-shifting sands of the dune lands.

History: During the Great Cataclysm, Zxo’lun suffered annihilation. Many coastal settlements sank beneath the waves while others succumbed to relentless tsunamis of enormous size. Devastatingly powerful earthquakes razed most surviving structures. Chaos storms swept through the land and wrought further devastation while monstrous entities of great malevolence emerged through planar rifts, leaving an enduring legacy of peril in this forsaken land.

Once a stronghold of the Chuulonian Empire, Zxo’lun fell into chaos after the Great Cataclysm and all attempts to reclaim the territory have failed. This resulted in the Chuulonian Empire’s attempts to seal the border with Zxo’lun by constructing a series of large stone guard towers.

Today: The land still bears scattered traces of its past habitation, with great stone ruins of once grand buildings and temples standing in what is now nearly lifeless desolate areas.

Ancient cities, now buried deep beneath sand and rubble, inspire tales of a once-vibrant advanced civilization who possessed great affluence. Brave but foolhardy adventurers, enticed by rumors of buried treasures of unimaginable wealth, venture in, though few return.
