Climate: Vornlithdor's harsh climate is tropical and arid, characterized by year-round sweltering temperatures. However, the sun's rays, dimmed by the ever-present ash clouds, offers a slight respite from the scorching heat of the sun. Rainfall is scarce, yet when it does occur it tends to rain extremely hard, and the ash-covered terrain struggles to absorb it. This results in large tumultuous flash floods that carve deep intricate gullies through the weakly cemented ash layers. The daunting labyrinth-like network of deep gullies makes navigation across this area treacherous. Due to the dark ash filled skies, rainstorms often strike without warning. Getting caught inside these deep gullies as a flash flood commences will likely lead to getting swept away and drowning.
Wildlife: The surrounding plant life struggles to survive amidst the constant onslaught of new fallen ash. Attempts at growth often prove to be futile with the scalding ash proving fatal to most plants. The ecosystem is sparse, with few animals that can endure the harsh environment.
Humanoids: The local inhabitants, the goblins of Gok Grusmak, revere Krakurod as a manifestation of the fire god Goun'ah, and often visit the volcano to make offerings and sacrifices. Their dark priests and sorcerers possess an intimate understanding of the mountain's rhythms, which helps guide them on safe approaches. The goblins believe the rituals they perform will harness the volcano's destructive power against their enemies, especially foolish outsiders who choose to venture too close.
Monsters: Among the adapted creatures that live on the volcano are gigantic ash worms, voracious predators who lurk in lava tubes and tunnels, and are capable of swallowing humans or goblins whole.
History: Krakurod's origins trace back to the Great Cataclysm, with the first lava emerging from a rift in the earth during the tumultuous aftermath. Since then, explosive ash clouds mark its continued growth, that has culminated in a height of nearly 2,800 feet.
Today: Despite the relentless turmoil it brings, Krakurod remains a focal point in the Vornlithdor region, a testament to the raw power of nature. Its history is etched in layers of ash, its geography shaped by destruction, and its inhabitants treading carefully between reverence and survival. As the land endures the legacy of the Great Cataclysm, Krakurod stands as both a symbol of its ferocity and a source of awe-inspiring wonder.
