Bhoras Desert

Pronunciation: BOAR-rass

Map Index: G4, G5

Location: Southeast coast of Beorlan situated between the Nyeni Hills and the Strait of Aklon

Geography: The Bhoras Desert stretches as an unforgiving wasteland between the Nyeni Hills to the north and the Strait of Aklon to the south. Today, the land stands as a desolate expanse, with shear bare pinnacles of rock rising starkly from the wind-swept terrain.

Primary Population: Cryx
Secondary Population: Sklarr
Minor Population: Turoch

Climate: The climate is oppressively hot and dry throughout the year, sustaining only drought-tolerant plants in the sandy soil.

Wildlife: Little large wildlife exists in these forsaken lands. Smaller animals such as desert rats and mice, lizards of many types, and poisoness snakes shelter underground during the scorching daylight hours, waiting for the cooler evening temperatures when great hordes of beetles and other insects emerge to feed.

Humanoids: Scattered throughout the Bhoras Desert are tribes of the insect-like Cryx. Living in underground caves and tunnels, they emerge at night to hunt and gather food.

The desert is also home to small tribes of the Sklarr Ratfolk, who also live underground in hand-dug tunnels and are nocturnal in nature.

Both the Cryx and the Sklarr are abominations created by the chaos storms of the Great Cataclysm. These former citizens of the Kishari Empire managed to survive the cataclysm but at a great cost as the corrupting powers unleashed by the storms transformed them into the race they are today.

These Ratfolk are vestiges of the Great Cataclysm, citizens of Bhoras that were horribly corrupted by the frequent magical chaos storms that plagued the land.

The other humanoid survivors of the chaoes storms include the insect-like Skryx. These humaniods with chitinous skin dig underground burrows for shelter.

Groups of Turoch riding swift black horses, occasionally venture into the Bhoras Desert, seeking artifacts and weapons left behind from the destruction caused by the Great Cataclysm.

Monsters: Amidst the harsh environment, numerous dangers lurk, such as monstrous plants mutated by the chaos storms, and nocturnal monstrous insects that emerge to hunt at night. Dangerous and horrific monsters also lurk in the shadowed ruins of old cities, ready to ambush intruders seeking their elusive treasures.

History: Once part of the prosperous Sultanate of Bhoras, it was a large region within the central portion of the Kishari Empire in eastern Beorlan. The Great Cataclysm wreaked havoc upon the land, with significant parts of the coastal areas sinking below the sea. Prodigious earthquakes also ravaged the countryside, while deadly tsunamis and chaos storms swept in from the sea. This widespread destruction decimated the cities and claimed the lives of most of Bhoras’ inhabitants. Only a fortunate few escaped northward in time, finding refuge in the area of the Principality of Korune.

Today: The Bhoras Desert remains a harsh and dangerous land, a haunting reminder of the cataclysmic events that reshaped its landscape and the creatures that now call it home. Scattered remnants of ruined old cities, now lost and forgotten, still reach skyward from great shifting sand dunes. Tales from travelers who have braved the desert speak of treasure and unusual magical items hidden within these ruins. However, travel here should not be undertaken lightly as great peril awaits.

Although the frequency of chaos storms has diminished over time, they still form within the desert, emanating dark swirling masses of chaotic magical energy with bursts of red and blue lightning. Any unfortunate beings or objects caught in these storms face unpredictable and usually negative consequences.
