The Phobos Incident
Overview
The Phobos Incident refers to a cosmic cataclysm that occured in 2265 on the planet Mars. Phobos, an orbiting moon of the planet Mars, had begun to descend into the planet's atmosphere. It was anticipated that the moon's size would have massive consequences for Mars colonization efforts if it fully impacted with the planet's surface. Although the crash was anticipated to eventually happen, calculations prior to the Singularity did not anticipate it happening for millennia. Neo-Byzantium, stationed on Mars at their Mars Arms Depot, attempted to put Phobos in a "trajectory stasis" through repeated launches of low-grade ballistic weaponry. Unsuccessful, they began to formulate a weapon known as "The Rapture" before the moon was heavily damaged by an unknown explosion (a sabotage effort by Oberon to eliminate Neo-Byzantium's Mars Arms Depot.) The explosion caused chunks of the moon to fly out of orbit and into the rest of the solar system, while a large body hurtled towards Mars's surface. The impact caused tremors that caused an estimated 3.7 billion Solar Units of damage to the arms depot. Still, the impact did not have the desired effect Oberon anticipated it would.Birth of Phobosura
As the moon's remains collided with Mars, a crater was formed along its surface. Out from the ruins of the moon emerged the celestial infant god Phobosura, who had not enough time to mature in its egg Phobos. Immediately, Phobosura wept, as all newborns do. The weeping from Phobosura caused massive tremors that caused an additional 1.4 billion solar units in damage to the arms depot. After its crying had ceased, Phobosura began to terraform the crater it was born in, forming unseen vegetation and simple, though functioning ecosystems with ease. What did not please Phobosura was also annihilated in a myriad of natural disasters. As Neo-Byzantium reconnaissance viewed Phobosura's powers of creation and destruction and its underdeveloped mind, they deemed it a danger to their interests and indicted it as a demonic power that had to be stopped. Neo-Byzantium was unsuccessful in terminating Phobosura, causing the child anguish that resulted in additional damages to the arms depot, estimated to be another 2 billion solar units to repair. However, their efforts to eliminate Phobosura had scared it into retreating within its crater-valley paradise. To this day, Phobosura has not left the confines of its cradle out of fear. Despite their best wishes, Neo-Byzantium has no means of effectively eliminated Phobosura without potentially destroying their arms depot, forcing them into a stalemate. Shortly after Phobosura was locked into the stalemate with Neo-Byzantium, United Earth Confederation forces landed outside of Phobosura's paradise and established a research station. After making note of its routines and behaviors, they attempted to sedate Phobosura with an experimental substance that comparatively, was equal to 500,000 horse tranquilizers. Naturally, this was unsuccessful in luring Phobosura to a deep enough sleep for the UEC's plans. As they began to extract Phobosura's blood, believing it contained the ability to enhance planned terraforming efforts for Venus, they awoke the god-child which began to openly weep and destroy everything around it. By a miracle for the UEC, they were able to escape with a single sample of Phobosura's blood, though suffered an 85% casualty rate for their team that established the research outpost. And as one might expect at this point, the arms depot suffered an additional 9 billion solar units in damages. Neo-Byzantium then attempted to open a international common court lawsuit against the UEC, which was found not guilty because Neo-Byzantium had previously refused to be associated with other diplomatic organizations in the past. Shortly after, Neo-Byzantium acknowledged international treaties and was given a seat at future conventions. They were not compensated for the 9 billion solar units in damages caused by UEC interference with the Phobos Incident. Since then, Phobosura has remained undisturbed, for everyone's best interest.
