Windrift

Clinging to the storm-chiseled cliffs of southern Fornalix, Windrift is a hardy quarry town where stone and storm meet in a battle of endurance—and innovation. Named for the razor-sharp eastern winds that tear across the plateaued terrain, Windrift’s landscape is fractured, towering, and treacherous. Yet it is precisely this chaos that has forged its greatest strength: ingenuity.   To mine the cliffs and crags, Windrifters employ advanced mechanical systems inspired by the gnomish tinkers of Crankwall . These include counterbalanced pulley lifts, wind-guided gliders, gear-driven stone saws, and storm-stabilized platforms—all designed to operate under extreme wind pressure. Windrifters don reinforced climbing rigs and wind-cut cloaks to navigate the vertical labyrinth, extracting dense, weather-hardened stone prized across Fornalix for its durability and sculptural beauty.   Though Windrift may lack Crankwall’s flash or scale, its practical brilliance shines through every winch, anchor, and sky-bridge. The town stands as a monument to survival through adaptation—its people as unshakable as the cliffs they quarry.   The districts of Windrift are spread across multiple plateaus, each connected by a network of sturdy bridges, lifts, and winding pathways. These vertical connections are vital to the town's infrastructure, allowing Windrifters to traverse the treacherous terrain and navigate between the scattered districts. High above the ground, sky-bridges link Highspire to the lower districts, while pulley lifts and winding stairways offer access to the more remote and rugged areas like Shatterdelve and Skyreach.

Districts of Windrift

-Stonehollow (Residential District) Carved into the lee side of a plateau, Stonehollow is sheltered from the worst of the wind. Sturdy stone homes and communal gardens cluster around natural crevices and windbreaks. A maze of chimneys and hanging clotheslines gives this area a lived-in, close-knit feel.   -Highspire (Civic District) The tallest plateau, Highspire houses the town hall, council chambers, and Windrift’s administrative heart. Wind turbines and signal towers crown the peak, and the Gilded Platform—an open-air council floor—overlooks the rest of the town. This is often where announcements and inventions are unveiled.   -Driftmarket (Business District) Bustling with traders, smiths, stonemasons, and glider mechanics, Driftmarket is alive with motion. Its narrow stone streets are filled with stalls, pulley carts, and the rhythmic clatter of haggling and hammering. Gnomish tech outposts and guild halls are scattered throughout.   -Cragmaw (Industrial/Quarry District) A jagged, heavily excavated plateau pocked with cranes, lifts, and stone-chutes. Cragmaw is the source of Windrift’s prized building stone. Deep rift-caves and open quarries stretch below the surface, echoing with the sound of pickaxes and machinery. This is where the quarry teams venture to harvest rock from the surrounding plateaus, traveling through narrow, wind-battered paths that lead down to the deep rift-caves and open quarries. The teams, often a mix of experienced miners, engineers, and gnomish tinkerers, navigate the labyrinthine stone fissures, using advanced mechanical tools to extract dense, weather-hardened stone prized for its durability and sculptural beauty.   -Skyreach (Temple District) A serene plateau with shrines to the Primordials—especially Vayu-Vata and Melakka Skyreach features wind-chimes, stone cairns, and air-cutting obelisks. The Temple of the Steady Wind stands here, where priests interpret weather patterns and offer blessings for safe work in the quarries.
