Overview

Dagra “Mother Wake” Coil is the infamous lizardfolk pirate who founded the Rackborn, a modern seafaring coalition claiming direct descent from the legendary Rack Collective. Fiercely intelligent, coldly pragmatic, and devastating in battle, Mother Wake is both a folk hero and a wanted criminal across Council-controlled waters. She is said to possess ancient charts, secret bloodlines, and a mind as unshakable as stone in a storm.

Origins

Mother Wake began her life at sea, earning her first command before she had scales enough to warrant respect. Over time, her daring raids and unmatched calm under fire earned her a following. Her most incendiary claim—that she is a direct descendant of one of the original founders of the Rack Collective—has never been definitively proven, but it’s been persuasive enough to bring dozens of pirate captains under her banner.

The Rackborn

In response to what she describes as the “coin-fed tyranny” of the Council of Nine, Mother Wake founded the Rackborn, a loosely affiliated confederation of pirate fleets dedicated to reclaiming freedom on the open sea.

Though individual captains maintain autonomy, they are bound by the tenets of the Ninewreck Covenant —a set of laws, oaths, and traditions laid down by Mother Wake herself. The Covenant emphasizes mutual respect among Rackborn crews, the targeting of Council naval assets, and a strict code of honor among thieves.

Enforcement and the Tempest Void

Crews who defy the Covenant or endanger the Rackborn’s reputation face swift and brutal consequences. The most severe punishment is sacrifice to the Tempest Void —a vast, churning fog bank born from the chaotic magics of The Rending . The Void swallows entire ships without a trace. No vessel sent into its depths has ever returned.

Captains condemned to the Void are bound, gagged, and sent with their ship into the mist, their fates sealed by ritual and the weight of betrayal. It is said the fog whispers before it claims its victims, but none live to speak of what it says.

Beliefs and Propaganda

Mother Wake’s speeches and broadsheets paint the Council as “two-bit warmongering thugs draped in silk and lies.” She calls for a return to a time when the seas belonged to the free, not the crowned. Her vision of pirate rule isn’t chaos—it’s a rough justice forged by shared risk and sovereign tides.

Current Status

Mother Wake is believed to command from aboard the Saltwake, a black-sailed dreadship said to be crewed by oracles, stormcallers, and blood-sworn veterans of the old fleets. The Council of Nine has issued multiple death warrants for her, though none have succeeded. Several agents tasked with hunting her have disappeared—some presumed lost to the Tempest Void, others thought to have joined her cause.
