Astral

Channeler Astral Gefyr (a.k.a. Child of Potential)

Astral is a youth who has the power to connect with Pokémon through the art of Channeling. They are a descendant from a long lineage of Channelers who were destined to act as a bridge between Pokémon and humans. Over the course of their adventures, they have gained powers beyond that of a normal Trainer, setting them slightly apart from the rest. With Astral's Pokemon at their side, this is when they are at their strongest. They also came into the possession of the power of MissingNo via a Pact, binding it to their body.     Team: Storm (Jolteon), Chapplin (Appletun), Cali (Aegislash), Puddle (Swampert)

Personal history

Before traveling as a member of the Phalanx, Astral was born to Kaida and Thalassius "Thala" Gefyr in Adagio. Kaida is a Pokémon researcher specializing in emotional intelligence, working at Thenia’s leading Pokémon Behavioral Institute. She used her Channeling as a means to further current research on Pokemon. Thalassius is a Pokémon ecologist who studies behavioral shifts in wild Pokémon due to environmental changes. He often spends months away in remote areas, documenting Pokémon populations and their interactions. With their mother dead, their father missing, and their sister standing against them, Astral has been left to forge their own way.   In Astral's early years, they would spend their days training to take the family title of Channeler from their mother. Even though they had great interest in the Gefyr lineage, Astral had always admired the job of a Pokemon Ranger. They would research old videos of Pokemon Rangers handling region-wide emergencies, all the way up to any modern news reports regarding their efforts. She had taught them much about their legacy, up until her death. Astral's mother had become sick, and so they always went to pray at the local shrine to wish her safe health. Unfortunately, she had passed just as her letter to the Olympus Conference arrived in the mail, so Astral decided to set out in her place. The townspeople noticed Astral had much more compatibility with Channeling than their mother. This caused a whispered rumor of Astral causing a shift in the boundaries between humans and Pokemon. With the blessing of the village, the Trainer and the Evolution Pokémon set out on their journey to the Sleepy Snorlax. With their mother dead, their father missing, and their sister Nyssa standing against them, Astral has been left to forge their own way. Unlike the Gefyrs before them, they have begun interacting with supernatural forces, something their ancestors would have feared. They've had to learn more about their role in the world while learning even more about the people and Pokémon in it. There is doubt lingering in Astral's mind about their abilities and how much good can come from it. Unlike the Gefyr before them, they have begun experimenting with supernatural forces, something their ancestors would have fearedin the form of seeking out the Fallen Creator.   --   One Year Later: After helping in fighting Palkia and restoring a major part of the Pantheon, Astral travels with Jasper and Layla around the region to liberate the different areas and rebuild. Along the way, they got to know MissingNo better while utilizing its knowledge. The voices lessen overtime and Astral would come to understand the Betrayer of the Gods. Darkrai's Mark upon Jasper is erased. Using Layla and 476's bond to gain info and his increasing artificer knowledge, the trio aim to unlock a way to make a Plate in case something happens to the current ones. They seek out the Odd Keystone housing the 108 spirits of Scherzo so that they may find peace. Astral eventually take time to go home to Adagio, arguing with their sister but finding understanding after engaging a battle between their starter Pokemon. On occasion, Astral comes home and speaks of their adventures. Training with their Pokemon, they develop a new fighting style and now focus more on meditation and knowledge to weigh their options more efficiently and wisely.

Sexuality

"Doesn't matter how you identify; I'll love and protect you no matter what."

Education

Homeschooling from their mother led to Astral not being the best in terms of book smarts. However, they do have a sharp intuition, and clever outside-the-box thinking. Due to consistent training, Astral has an uncanny sense of understanding things regarding Pokémon thorugh both their parents' work and his mother's role as a Channeler. She would let Astral read her reasearch notes, then help them translate it into a feeling akin to a trained sixth sense outside of Channeling. This was to make sure her child would not only use their supernatural talents to navigate tough challenges.
"Pokémon are always a part of us, but they also separate beings. We can bridge the gap, although we should respect that gap as well. That way we don't act better than them, and we don't give them the idea that they are more or less than us." - A quote from Kaida Gefyr, Astral's mother.
After a year, Astral has gained great amounts of knowledge on Pokemon behavior. Working alongside Pokemon Rangers they had also gained some decent survival and battle experience. Their mind is their greatest asset outside of their powers.

Morality & Philosophy

Family Beliefs: The Gefyr family's core philosophy is built upon three guiding principles that shape their approach to Channeling, Pokémon relationships, and their role in the world. Astral, having read their family's research notes as a child, was deeply influenced by these ideas—even if their personal journey has led them to question, challenge, and possibly abandon them.
  1. Connection is Natural, But Control is Learned: The Gefyrs believe that their ability to Channel Pokémon effortlessly is not a supernatural blessing but an inherent trait—a biological or spiritual sensitivity that must be refined through knowledge and discipline. If left unchecked, a Channeler can be overwhelmed by the emotions and instincts of Pokémon. The Gefyr family developed methods for filtering emotions, strengthening mental barriers, and maintaining personal identity in the face of powerful connections. This principle emphasizes moderation—one should listen to Pokémon but not become them.
  2. Understanding Precedes Power: The Gefyrs reject the idea that power over Pokémon is the ultimate goal. Instead, they believe that true strength comes from deep comprehension of Pokémon emotions, desires, and instincts. Their research was largely philosophical and psychological, focusing on empathy-based training, emotional healing, and conflict resolution between humans and Pokémon. Some members of the family refused to battle altogether, believing that violence distorted the natural harmony between Trainer and Pokémon.
  3. The Channeler is the Bridge, Not the Master: The Gefyr family saw Channelers as intermediaries, not rulers. Their role was to facilitate communication, not impose their will upon Pokémon or force obedience. They taught that Pokémon should always retain their autonomy—forcing a connection, even through Channeling, was an act of arrogance and corruption. This is why the Gefyrs never sought political or religious power; they served as advisors, counselors, and healers, never rulers.
Personal Beliefs: As long as something can be done, the only thing that matters is that you tried. Doing the right thing can have the same number of consequences as doing the wrong thing. Finding most truths is better than not finding any at all. Following your ideals is good as long as you maintain fluid tolerance towards any opposition.

Taboos

  • To never use their powers for immoral purposes.
  • Turning back on those in need when you know you can help.
  • Mother's Word: Act within sufficient reason, and do not let your heart control you fully. Mind, Heart, and Body must be balanced. Remembering this helps Astral to snap out of any trance they're under.
  • The idea that power over Pokémon is the ultimate goal.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

  • Uniting Pokémon and people as one.
  • Save Thenia from looming dangers.
  • Show MissingNo the power of "human potential", and befriend it. It's not an outsider, it exists just as much as any other deity. Everyone deseves a friend. No matter how dangerous they seem to be, I'll protect it with my life if I must.
  • Become a Pokemon Ranger. Helping Pokemon always felt better than doing battles.

Religious Views

"The gods should be handling the divine affairs, but I guess with all due respect: a hand must guide the will if there is none in the moment."

Social Aptitude

Astral initially was friendly to all, able to interact with most easily. After each encounter with the horrors of each place they went, they now tread with caution when it comes to any new person or Pokemon. Astral's instincts make them more inclined to spend time with their team versus people. Each member of Phalanx are the easiest people to talk with.

Mannerisms

Partially humble, partially rude. While all of their intentions are good, they can sound unpleasant. Quiet, sarcastic on occasion. Talks a lot with their hands.

Hobbies & Pets

Astral's team is made up of many different Pokemon, the Channeler using them interchangibly according to the plan they have in mind. Their partner Pokemon Storm, a Jolteon, has excellent tracking talents and battle potential. A genetic anomaly occurred in her birth, gaining the high-risk Volt Tackle move from her father, a Raichu. She is level 40, has a Naive nature, and her characteristic is "likes to run." The second Pokemon, Chapplin (full name Charlie Chapplin) is a passive, easygoing Appletun who often uses her Vine Whip attack for both terrain traversal and keeping foes at bay. She is level 21, has a Modest nature, and her characteristic is "thoroughly cunning." Cali, Astral's third Pokemon, is an Aegislash that allows the Channeler to use its body as an actual sword and shield to bolster their in-battle capabilities, also using King's Shield to defend theirself. As of the fight with Melankholia, it is level 41, has an Adamant nature, and its characteristic is "a little quick tempered." Puddle the Swampert is Astral's fourth Pokemon in both roster and catching order. While very powerful, the Mud Fish Pokemon has not been with his Trainer long enough to listen completely, opting to smother them with love instead. As of the encounter with Heatran at the Sleepy Snorlax, he is level 40, has a Jolly nature, and his characteristic is "good perseverance."

These people...

These people here are some of the weirdest people I've ever met. First there's this odd little kid with a Sableye who's apparently a Poké Ball Crafter. He had hurt Storm pretty bad. I can't blame him after all of that, though. It was a misunderstanding, and with that whole spooky moment with Darkrai, he's fearful he'll meet a bitter end. Then there's Koji, a guy veiled in mystery who is very exemplary at battling. He caught a Pawniard through a stroke of luck and sheer determination. I cannot get ANY read on Leo. Frank is...... for lack of a better word: strange. He falls out of a wormhole with a horde of Jellicent-like creatures, knows way too much about them, and claims to be from a world similar to our own. He helped us at the very least, but I still do NOT trust him and his Togepi. However, they're the only people I'm aware of that survived whatever has happened in this area. No use thinking on it for now. I need to make sure we get to stay our fair share of the time at the Sleepy Snorlax. There's nothing normal about that light that had appeared before we passed out. I have to find out what happened.

Soulwave Echo

I settle onto the cool earth, folding my legs beneath me like the gentle curve of a sleeping Pokémon. My hands rest lightly on the ground, palms open, reaching for the steady heartbeat of the world beneath me. The air hums softly—the distant call of waves, the whisper of leaves—and I breathe in slow, steady waves.   All is motion, I remind myself. I am the shore.   Closing my eyes, I let the noise of thought fade, like ripples smoothing out on a still pool. Memories rise—fragments of faces, laughter, quiet moments shared with companions. I do not chase them. I watch them, letting their shapes shift and blend.   A flicker of warmth, a pang of sorrow, the faintest thread of hope—each feeling is a thread I follow inward, weaving a tapestry of soundless echoes.   I reach deeper, seeking the voice beneath the voice, the feeling beneath the feeling. Around me, the world softens. The hum of life grows louder—not as noise, but as a melody only I can hear.   The emotions of others brush against me: a restless fear, a silent plea, a quiet joy. They do not speak in words, but their echoes stir something in me—a response, a promise, a connection.   My breath slows, and I place a hand over my heart. I am not alone. I never have been.   I open my eyes, the shadows of the unseen retreating as the sun’s light returns. I rise slowly, grounding myself with a whispered promise:   I return, with grace.

Power of the Plates

After attuning wiith the Iron Plate, a strange phenomena occurred. While everyone was attempting to get the Icicle Plate under control as it spews out subzero Ice-Type energy My hands became heavy, and gained a metallic sheen! It was as if they were steel themselves... Was that in relation to the Plates being in close proximity, or was something else causing a reaction?   Maybe the Plates aren't just relics, but pieces of the same puzzle.

Recent Events

Where do I begin?   Since my last entry, many things have taken place. Allow me to summarize:   After the Blinding had taken place, Koji, Jasper, Leo, Frank, and I found a few Pokémon living in the now-abandoned arena. Koji successfully caught a Bisharp, and we all decided we would make our way back to the inn we previously stayed in. Soon we find out that the inn we had stayed in for the tournament had been turned into a base of operations for a tribe of unfortunate people who lived throughout the aftermath of the Blinding. We spent a long time at the inn, helping gather supplies and earning the trust of Phineas, the self-proclaimed leader of the Sleepy Snorlax Tribe. Ava, Phineas' sister, took great care of us while we stayed at the Inn. It took an intense and emotional battle to do so. We also learned more about how Ultra Beasts are just like humans and Pokémon; Everyone has their own thoughts and emotions. The professor's assistant came to give us more info about the Blinding and its origin, a being called Necrozma. We later learn that Necrozma has eaten 1% of the stars in the sky. Ava helped us gear up before we left the inn, and wanted to join us on our journey to prevent Necrozma from consuming more light. We accepted knowing full well we need all the help we can get.   After leaving the Sleepy Snorlax, we encountered this suspicious man wearing a mask. He seemed inhuman almost, speaking in such robotic ways and mannerisms. The party decided to ambush him and obtained minimal info on the Ultra Beasts before he escaped. We would later travel blindly, getting sucked into a portal to this abandoned library within a pocket dimension. I befriended a Honedge and named it Cali, and Koji caught a Yamask, giving the small spirit the name Ana. We learned a vast amount of knowledge and saved a Magearna named Solar, the attendant to the library. It, unfortunately, had to do its job, even after the passing of its creator and its "sister," the creator's daughter. Layla, a girl we met at the Sleepy Snorlax, joined us at the library. It wished for freedom due to its heavy loss, but we helped heal its heart. We made sure it could communicate with us via my Rotom Phone.   After our time there, an Ultra Wormhole (as Frank calls it) opened once more and separated the group into different places. When we landed in the unknown location, I almost died by falling off a mountain with poorly timed rappelling. Luckily Layla caught me with her astounding telekinetic powers. Though it seems we got transported to the Distortion World, the realm of the Legendary Giratina. We witnessed the fall of Arceus, the Original One, the event rendering Layla comatose from the trauma of the event. We were stuck, seeing the exit portal far above the area where we had landed. After being stuck there for a few days, Jasper and Ava found a way to save us. While attempting to leave, Giratina appeared once more to disrupt this. Layla prevented this by sacrificing herself. She did this not only to help us flee but to save my Applin named Chapplin as well. We assumed the worst with portal closing and showing no signs of coming back.   Ava, Jasper and I found ourselves flung into Allegro, a moderately sized coastal town. We attempted to shop for some supplies, to no avail. Jasper did obtain a Charizard that was very rare in color. All thanks to an appraiser who analyzed the Iron Plate I unearthed before going to the Athenaeum. I attempted to gain a vision with my newfound powers, and ending up making a deal with a man in the mindscape of the Iron Plate where I would attempt to gather the Plates to free him from the mental prison. After a few days, we reconvened with Koji and Frank. Layla seemed to have not perished! She had been spewed from a portal much like the one we had escaped through prior to staying at the hotel we're in currently. Chapplin is alive too, and seems to have stepped up to protect Layla, as it had evolved into an Appletun in the time we were separated. Welcome home buddy.
