The Quiet Flame of Thorne
Born a second son of Corvin Thorne, Vellan was never intended for lordship or politics. His early life was spent among scriptures and swordplay, choosing to pledge himself to the Order of the Silverbrand at the age of 13. Unlike his louder kin, Vellan was measured, thoughtful, and burdened by ideals.
He believed in justice—not as punishment, but as preservation. He was known for quoting scripture even in combat and was mocked by his peers for being "a preacher in a knight’s steel."
But those who fought beside him respected him. He did not kill in anger. He killed to protect peace.
Rise Through the Silverbrand
Vellan’s natural sense of strategy, law, and restraint earned him quick advancement. He served during the Purging Years (530–568 PR), rooting out God Hand cultists in the southern marshes, and later acted as emissary to Albion to broker a divine accord between fractured churches.
He married Maris Vaelbrook, a war priestess who fought alongside him during the Ashen Reclamation. Their union was said to be one of deep love, mutual purpose, and unshakable trust.
Together, they had a single son: Aldric.
The Oathbreaker’s Dilemma (548–568 PR)
In 548 PR, during a failed diplomatic mission to prevent a blood war between the Lords of Goffik and a breakaway Fenrisian cult, Vellan uncovered evidence that a Silverbrand commander had instigated the war to test divine prophecy.
Vellan was horrified. The Order had not acted as protectors—but as manipulators. He refused to follow further orders, and attempted to expose the commander before the war escalated.
Instead, Vellan was silenced, framed for insubordination, and stripped of his rank.
The truth was buried.
The commander was promoted.
And Vellan became the scapegoat of Silverbrand shame.
Exile and Death
Disgraced and cast out from the order he once bled for, Vellan returned to a quiet life. His wife Maris died defending a temple in 551 PR, leaving him alone with Aldric—only three years old.
He raised his son with discipline, love, and no illusions about the Order's flaws. But Aldric never forgot the whispers, the sneers, the stigma.
In 592 PR, Vellan was found dead in the old chapel he maintained alone—his sword laid on his chest, his vows burned into the floor around him in divine script.
Some say he took his own life.
Others believe a Silverbrand zealot finally finished the job.
But Aldric was old enough to remember.
Legacy Through Aldric
Though branded a failure in life, Vellan’s words and wisdom forged Aldric’s spine. The Silverbrand Order that once cast him out now bears his son as Grandmaster.
And while Aldric never speaks of his father publicly, those close to him have heard this phrase whispered during moments of inner war:
“I do not forgive the blade that struck you. I simply became sharper than it.”
Some whisper that Aldric keeps Vellan’s old sword—not to wield, but to remember.
Philosophy and Beliefs
Vellan Thorne believed:
- That justice should never serve pride.
- That oaths are sacred—but must not become cages.
- That even the divine must be questioned when mortal lives are at risk.
These beliefs may have ended his life…
But they saved his son’s soul—at least for a time.
Quote – Vellan Thorne
“You speak of duty like it’s a sword. But I’ve carried it. I’ve buried friends with it.
Duty is a wound. And you must choose if you heal it… or bleed forever.”
