Hidden Secret   To most of the people of Varno, Conte Ristomaur Tiriac is just the latest in a long line of gracious and highbaned rulers. What few know is that Ristomaur harbours a surprising secret. Ristomaur is not the latest in a long line of rulers but is in fact the entire line, having ruled Varno in a variety of different guises for the past two centuries. Ristomaur Tiriac is in fact a vampire driven by a lifelong obsession to rid himself of his vampirism.   He has travelled far and wide searching for a cure and maintains an odd cadre of assistants who help him in this quest, including Ramoska Arkminos, a nosferatu so ancient he cannot remember what it was like to be alive.   This endless travelling away from his estate, Korsinoria Palace near the town of Corvischior, is not only essential to Ristomaur's continuing work on a vampiric cure, it allows him to stay distant from his subjects, preventing them from realising his unnatural condition   The Years ongoing   The majority of Loegres's citizens greatly idolize Ristomaur for his efforts in fighting against the daemons and even chide him for overworking, unaware of his dreadful past. However, others lament the inflexibility of rules set by the Abbey, citing imposed curfew and difficult to obtain permits as examples. The citizens are also shown to have immense faith in the gods, singing high praises for them and visiting the Cathedral to worship them.   Ristomaur is granted his title of Shepherd in Mutebay by Prince Percival Yil Mid Asgard of Gloomfield in a ceremony that is publicly celebrated. A prominent shadow guild known as the Bloodwing Butterflies, led by Tabatha Baskerville, operates in Mutebay. The guild is shown to hold significant power in the city's affairs by being able to prepare legitimate permits and having members among the city's guards.

Dralkard Manor is a vineyard estate outside the villages in southeastern Edelyin. It fell in heavy disrepair after its former owners, Master Algrim Dralkard and his wife Nessa, disappeared and the manor burned in a fire that destroyed the upper floor. Locals heard disembodied shrieks from the manor and shunned it as a haunted place.   After it was investigated by a band of Pathfinders, the lord purchased the estate, retired to it, and has undertaken the task of rebuilding his new home

The Island of Varno is filled with dense forests and deep lakes. While it should be a fertile haven, the county is afflicted by fickle, some would say unnatural, weather, with seasons of plenty followed by years of drought and famine. As a result, the people of Varno are some of the most pious in all Edelyin, quick to proclaim their undying faith to Daimore, or fickle Farore, as soon as the weather turns against them. Many are sadly willing to buy into the lies of any passing evangelist con man or soothsayer. The harsh conditions tend to turn neighbour against neighbour, and during times of famine, Varno's inhabitants are some of the most suspicious in the country.   The harsh conditions are further exacerbated by the hands-off style of Varno's ruler, Conte Risotmaur Tiriac, who keeps himself distant from his people
