Originally the word for a great house; Maison has over time migrated into describing the families occupying the residences. By 735AD the title became a protected title only given to the official organisations acknowledged by the Senate. Only a handful of new organisations have been bestowed the honour of the title, and therefore most Maisons are organisations formed before 735AD. The word not only refers to the organisations themselves but also to the building in which the Maisons reside, a symbol of immeasurable value to the people part of the Maison.
