|| Broomvale District
Overview
Broomvale occupies the modest western slopes between the dense industrial core of St. Lawrence’s and the affluent Trivet Heights. Developed in the early 19th century as a respectable middle-class district, Broomvale houses Cabinet’s clerks, tradesmen, teachers, and small proprietors in orderly rows of brick terraces and semi-detached homes. The housing is moderate in scale—smaller than Trivet but well-kept and consistent in quality.
Tree-lined streets, modest gardens, and local institutions like a grammar school, temperance hall, and dual chapels contribute to its image as a morally upright and civically engaged suburb. Light industry and workshops exist on the district’s fringes, but factories are absent. While not elite, Broomvale maintains a clear distance from working-class slums, and its subdued, disciplined culture is reflected in the lack of vice: quiet inns replace gin shops, and opium rarely finds a foothold here. It represents the backbone of Cabinet’s respectable artisan and managerial class, ranging from middle to upper class in wealth.
Due to the proximity to St. Lawrence Quarter, quite a few residents here are Guild leaders, frequently being elected to the Improvement Commission. Broomvale is disproportionately favored in infrastructural and quality-of-life policies. It is often the second to receive new amenities and ameliorated conditions (after Trivert Heights). This is an example of the Matthew effect, a pattern of accumulated advantage.

Location
West of St. Lawrence’s Quarter, on moderate slopes rising from the central city toward Trivet.
Land Use
Residential with local shops. This area developed slightly earlier than Trivet as a genteel middle-class district.
Socioeconomic Profile
Middle-class and skilled artisans. Many of Cabinet’s senior clerks, teachers, and independent tradesmen (cutlers, merchants) live here. It is more diverse than Trivet but far from slum conditions.
Built Environment
Neat, medium-density terraces and semi-detached brick houses. Houses are smaller than in Trivet but well-built, typically 3–5 rooms each with small front/back yards. Sidewalks and street trees appear on newer roads. A notable private gentlemen’s club and a Temperance Hall were erected here. The character is of an orderly, “pleasant residential area.”
Infrastructure
A parish chapel, a non-conformist chapel, and a grammar school (just opened) serve the community. Gas lamps illuminate main streets. A small town garden is at the edge of Broomvale. The canal skirts its northeast border, crossed by a towpath bridge.
Key Industries
Light trades and workshops. Many residents are retired shopkeepers or artisans. A few small cutlery finishing shops, tanneries and carpenters’ yards exist on the margins. No large factory is here.
Vice Economy
Low-key. A handful of respectable taverns and inns dot the main road. No brothels or large gambling houses; rougher elements rarely penetrate this district. Residents here are usually not involved heavily with the opium culture.

Did you know the Stokers call their operations "Tours" in homage to the late St. Berengar? Whether you're an amateur cabinetographer or touristy chatter, this is the place to document and discuss Cabinet’s crumbling cutlery halls, soot-choked parks, crooked rowhouses, and blood-damp back alleys.
