Free Floating Factories

Purpose / Function

These are 24 moblie conglomerations of rotating stations dedicated to manufacturing bio-products from the naturally occurring proteins.

Design

Habitats

The cylinders that make up the many flutteries were retrofitted specifically to grow and support living ships. This could involve cutting special sections within the cylinder for ship growth, with controlled light and temperature conditions to support the growth and continued maintenance of the bioships. These are grown from special organisms and bioengineered materials, researched on-site, compatible with moving through space using organic propulsion systems, such as reaction mass expulsion by the ship.

Denizens

Specialized Economy

Though they are far from ideal space ships, flutteries routinely move throughout the Miasmic Astral while siphoning the moll around them. The almost zeroG environment is most preferable to migrating cells, leading to the consolidation of echoist, nanotechnologists, AI developers and all-manner of R&D.   The most remedial labour deal in growing plants in nutrient-rich solutions that allow for efficient use of space and water; with food production systems being based on advanced biotechnology such as hydroponics, aeroponics and vertical farming.

Bio-Products

Bioships
Spacecrafts composed primarily of biological components giving it a softer look to its competition.
Synthetic Meat
Cloned meat grown in sheets from similar materials to simulacrum in long tower structures.
Black Algae
Altered algae that are circulated through large transparent bags, stored externally, and feeds on waste and radiation.
Simulacrum
Artificial demi-organic bodies that take on a multitude of shapes for a consciousness to inhabit.

Hazards & Traps

Collisions

There are some unique dangers in the event of a collision, particularly when compared to a single rotating station. These potential dangers include:
Contamination of Bio-products: A collision could cause a release of different bio-products being manufactured, which could have unforseen effects from cross contamination, as well as potentially harm the inhabitants of the station.   Loss of Equipment and Facilities: A collision could damage or destroy equipment and facilities necessary for production of bio-products, resulting in significant financial losses.   Loss of Production: A collision could disrupt the production process, resulting in a loss of output and potential delays in bio-product delivery.   Safety of Workers: Workers on the station would be at risk of injury or death due to the structural damage and falling into the void.   Environmental Risks: A collision could also result in the release of hazardous materials or biochemicals used in the production process, which could react with the latent proteins in luminous clouds.

Special Properties

Stem Spines

The stems are highly complex biostructures containing advanced systems that allow scientists and engineers to cultivate bioships with a high degree of precision and control.   It is essentially an enclosed chamber that inflates as the bioships grow bigger. The chamber is controlled by a complex network of sensors, computer systems, and robotic devices that monitor and adjust conditions as needed. It is filled with a nutrient-rich solution that provides the necessary materials for bioships to grow and develop, which would also contain various genetic constructs, such as DNA and RNA, to shape their development.   Advance imaging and monitoring systems allow developers to closely monitor the situation, so they can make adjustments at the molecular level, using such things as nanorobotics, to shape and ensure optimal growth.

Alterations

Modular

The basic design consists of two cylinders, each with a radius of several kilometers and a length of 20-30 kilometers, rotating in opposite directions to provide artificial gravity. Tens or hundreds of cylindical habitats lashed together in ever rotating globs via tethers and struts at several kilometers of distance.

Architecture

The large self-sustaining cylinders, designed for industrial production, originated from the pearl-built colony ships.   They create their own artificial gravity by rotation and closed ecological systems to provide food and air for its inhabitants. The cylinder is divided into different levels, with the upper levels dedicated to residential areas and the lower levels dedicated to manufacturing, assembly and storage.
Facilities operate non-stop and are so protected as to be unaffected by cosmic weather or natural disasters.   They possess advance robotic systems and automation that aid in the different manufacturing processss to produce a wide range of goods, from consumer goods to heavy industrial equipment, in the zero-gravity environment.

Tourism

Betans
Ethnicity | Mar 3, 2024

A ridge social hierarchy passed through family and defined by body castes

Defectors

Betans who escape the hold of their pantheons arrive in hard-drives of thousands seeking legal protection and refuge.   The minds have long felt a sense of disconnection from the physical body they used to have. Once one regains a body, they remain concerned of the safety and security of their compatriots' digital existence, as well as fear of being shut down or erased.
Gammians
Ethnicity | Mar 3, 2024

Cybernetically enhanced clones trapped in stigmatized bodies

Asylum Seekers

Gammians who have had their bodies taken away live in a state of complete dependence on technology for survival.   They exist in a state of anxiety about their uncertain future and their humanity and identity being constantly called into question.
