Karn's Well

Karn's Well, originally named Karnshastvolo, is the capital city of the Great Karn Empire and largest city inhabited by the karn people. The city itself is hidden behind a massive circular wall with only one surface level external entrance on the western side, it sits on an island on the western half of Thyre Sea Lake. Karn's Well gets its name from the massive well at the center of the city that acts as an opening for a series of tunnels that lead from the city to the lower collection of chambers known as the Flooded City and ultimatley out to the lake itself.

Demographics

A large portion of the population is made up of Vosh karn, however all ethnicities of karn live within the city; the second most populace being the Dav then the Hazzat. There are even the occasional member of another species who are permitted to live in Karn's Well, though this is a very seldom granted honor.

Government

Along with being the seat of the Great Karn Empire, Karn's Well has an local administrative government that runs the city itself.   The Well Council, run by a minister appointed by the emporer, oversees the needs of the city proper, the Flooded City, as well as the hovels and shanty towns outside the Eight Gates beneath the city.

Industry & Trade

Outside trade if mostly limited to the Hashien to the west and the humans to the north. The karn use outgrown and unused shell and carapace to make weapons, shields, and armor, selling them to the squishier of the Parloss races who wage war on a normal basis. While not always being stronger than what the other races can craft, though sometimes indeed being the better piece of equipment, they are always the cheaper option than smithing ones own armor and weapons.

Infrastructure

From outside the 75 meter (246 feet) wall the city can not be seen; but inside, the city is shaped roughly like that of a bowl, the buildings all span outwards from the well and rise on eight concentric tiers until the building roofs meet the wall at the top where a traversable rampart runs along the entire wall and acts as the highest street of the city.   The well itself extends down below the level of ground water collection, to the bedrock of the island. Tunnels, all kept clean from underwater growth and bricked with the same white polished (______) stone as above, branch out from the well in all directions, connecting innumerable underground chambers to the city above as well as to the waters of Thyre Lake. The chambers range in size from individual estates to village sized caverns and are filled with water, giving it the name The Flooded City. At the lake bed, coming out from the Flooded city are a series of eight fortified openings known as the Eight Gates. These are the main entrances fro the karn in and out of the city, helping to protect the city above from outside invaders while not inhibiting trade within the empire itself.

History

The above ground city of Karnshastvolo (now Karn's Well) was built between 100 and 120 after the reunification of the Great Karn Empire. However, the original below ground city was a rediscovery after the collapse during the Ash Age, during which the original empire fell after the Marsh Rivers War and the imperical city Pshcholet to the east with it. The empire broke into three factions and scattered into the waters of the now reinhabitable Thyre Sea Lake, the largest being Vosh of Karnshastvolo who reforged the empire and set it's new seat in the newly built city.   After meeting humans and heaing their description of the city while learning to communicate the Kal adopted the name Karn's Well, declaring that it sounded more distinguished than a name that shared human speech sounds with the volokatchen.
