Personal history

Khato was born in the Casal Mountains but was thrown out of his family at birth due to his deformities. An old woman picked him up and raised him in a hut in rural Foles. When the woman died, he tried to return to his kind but was once again shunned. So instead he turned to the Kingdom of Doslia and headed for Arkaley, the capital of Foles, the province he'd begun to consider home. Being physically disadvantaged, Khato eventually passed out on the side of the road and fully expected to die. It was several days later that he woke up in a small clay house with a teenage Roen at his side. Khato explained what he was trying to do--to go to Arkaley and study history--and the human boy agreed to help him. The two didn't plan on a permanent arrangement, but they bonded over the journey. When Roen left Khato to his studies in the libraries of Arkaley, he began to feel a distinct sense of loss and felt himself drawn back to the city, despite a lack of interest in anything the city had to offer. Khato proved an able student, devouring literature and able to commit obscure facts to memory. Once he had graduated with honors, Khato became a professor and he spent his time off in Roen's clay hut in the country. He also adopted the last name Rakyn-Lok, which is Casali for "fighting soul." Khato's loyalty to his adopted kingdom as well as his physical deformities and status as an academic made him a target when the Empire invaded, forcing Khato to go underground for several years, only really reemerging with the establishment of House Rahal as the new monarchy.
