Defences

There is a wall around the city center, with a ditch around it to make the wall extra tall from the outside (the dirt removed to create the moat was used to build the wall, similar to the real world walls around the historic Benin City). Watchtowers are posted along the wall, with the largest at the main gates into the city center.

Architecture

Buildings are mostly constructed of clay, mud, and earth. Fortifications may have a stone base, or particularly wealthy homes may have a wooden structure beneath the clay. Virtually all buildings are one or two stories tall, with only main watchtowers and the university observatory having three. Upper levels are constructed of wood planks, which are then covered in clay. Basements, however, are common, with even the middle or lower class excavating some sort of crawl space type of basement where food is usually kept. Basements are very rarely used for living space. Buildings are usually square in nature, but may be circular or otherwise irregularly shaped the further one travels from the city center.
Around the outskirts of the city, there will often be cattle-herding nomads who set up temporary camps that may last for a night or several months. These are constructed of between one to a dozen huts composed of cowhides stretched between long branches that are opened on one of the four or five sides, arranged around a central area, which usually has a fire pit or bonfire (cattle are kept outside of the circle). The largest of these huts is reserved for sleeping, or for the leader's sleeping quarters, for larger camps, and opens to the north, to protect from the sun, or against the wind during cool seasons.
