The Desert Plague, Part 2
General Summary
With Amon-thul holding the hand of the girl he tried to free from the curse and the rest of the party out in the hall to wait, the first part of the night passed quietly. Then, in the middle of the night, a nurse came around the corner on her rounds. Tiff noticed that she had a transmutation aura, and Kursus immediately charged her and killed her. Azim, horrified, used a spell to send his armour onto her, which activated breath of life, bringing her back. Scared and horrified at what had just happened to her, she told them that 'he' made her put on the mask. The mask turned out to be the result of the spell greater claim identity, which had turned another nurse into a porcelain mask, which when worn, caused the wearer to become a perfect copy of the one turned into a mask.
Meanwhile, Amon-thul was roused from his quiet vigil by a vine poking through the window holding a scroll. On the scroll was a note to him which read: "You’ve felt it, haven’t you? The touch of green. It whispers, doesn’t it? You call it sickness, but I call it awakening. The desert is thirsty, and you—these children—are its answer. Why fight what was always meant to be?” Amon-thul rushed to the window and looked out, yelling to the others that the perpetrator was near. He heard the flutter of a bird's wings right after he filled the alley with Everard's black tentacles. Asano decided to become an 80's action hero and jumped through a plate glass window to get outside. Unfortunately for him, he not only got cut up by the glass (not wearing his armour) but also tripped on his way through and landed face first in the dirt.
With the party rushing to the roof (except Tiff who stayed behind to guard the children) a fight ensued with a crow, which revealed itself to be a were-crocodile named Ardent Kenn. They fought a good fight, with Ardent firing off some powerful spells, lighting much of the city on fire in the process. They defeated him, but a contingency spell took his body away. The men of the party then spent time battling fires while Tiff continued to rest in order to prepare spells in the morning.
The next morning, they discovered that the girl whose hand Amon-thul had been holding was now a cactus. So, with new spells prepared and expensive spell components were gathered, Tiff removed the curse upon all the children in the hospital, returning the cactus to being a girl. She also removed the curse from Amon-thul. Then, through means of magic, the party was able to determine not only the whereabouts of Ardent Kenn, but also a timeline of events. Using this newfound information, they teleported to Ardent's oasis and battled him and his crocodile pets, finally putting an end to his threat. They discovered that a bunch of the plants found in this oasis were actually transformed children, and spent several days hanging out in the oasis until all of the children were returned to their rightful form.
Ardent Kenn's Timeline
-Ardent Kenn, were-crocodile druid of Sebek receives a vision of a blossoming desert, free of the corrupting influence of civilzation.
-Purchasing a decanter of endless water, he travels to a remote part of the desert, north of Raqib. Over the course of a week, he digs a basin into the sand, about 30’ deep at the center. Erecting an obelisk (40’ tall) he carves an effigy of Sebek and his holy symbol into it. Using sovereign glue, he affixes the decanter of endless water onto the top of the obelisk and activates it on the fountain setting. Eventually, the basin filled with water, creating a small lake in the desert.
-Ardent transplants a palm tree to the shore of his lake. He uses plant growth to bless the area with increased fertility. Along with the palm tree, he transports a wagonload of good soil which he uses to make garden beds for plants. (This was delivered to him by Ava, Marco, Roger, and Nahshon)
-Preparations completed, Arden Ken travels to Raqib and begins his true plan. Wild shaping into a domestic cat, he wanders the streets looking for street urchins. Disguising the touch part of the spell as rubbing up against their legs, he begins using Green Caress to start the transformation of Raqib’s children. This is done daily until the local healers become involved, quarantining afflicted children in the local hospital.
-With local cases increasing, local healers bring all known cases into the hospital and put the city into lockdown. At this point, Arden uses greater claim identity on local healers in order to infiltrate the hospital. This allows him to monitor the progress of the children and transport them to his oasis in time to plant them in the garden beds.
