The Vandor

The Vandor, or the forest elves, are a culture of elves that formed in the dense tropical rainforests of the elven home planet. They are second in population to the Sel. Their culture is based around the natural world, and unity with nature.

Major language groups and dialects

The Vandor dialect is related to that of the Sel, but more complex in tenses, and features many more specific descriptive terms and adjectives than the common Sel dialect. Because of this, some authors will use Vandor words in their otherwise Sel written work, to add to the descriptive quality of their pieces.

Art & Architecture

The Vandor are known for their pottery, paintings, and music. Fine clay pottery is often made to display images of nature, and tell fables through imagery. Complex fantastical paintings depicting themes of their connection with the land are also common among wood elves.

Wood elf visual art is regularly very detail-oriented, full of cultural symbols, made to tell folk stories and features the flora and fauna of their home planet. They are less focused on realism than the Sel.

Wood elf music commonly features a group of musicians seated in a circle, playing partially improvised pieces with woodwind instruments and drums. Instruments are made with natural materials. Synthetic instruments are seen as improper, and unable to truly connect with nature . This music is used as a way to connect with the land and their heritage, through following ancient musical structures, while bringing new life to them with improvised phrases.

Wood elven music is modal. The most common modes that are used are lydian, mixolydian, and dorian. Most wood elven woodwind instruments are made to play only in one base key. There are 3 standard keys they are made in. They are each the equivalent of a major third apart from one another.
