M'Kay and Yar

Background

P'Ache Prime Media Outlets (also known as PPMO) is a fundamental part of the Peacekeeper Alliance, with the mission to spread the truth far and wide, and to be transparent in doing so. They are seen as reporting real stories with humour and empathy but without bias.   While they started as a news outlet, PPMO quickly branched out into fictionalised stories which were designed to entertain, again with humour, empathy, and without bias.
The longest-running crime drama1 was M'Kay and Yar, a media story about a detective and his assistant solving crimes in far-flung parts of the Peacekeeper Territories. It ran for 25 years and is still regularly aired on various PPMO services.

Synopsis

The first episode of 'M'Kay and Yar' opens with the pair landing on Unity in The Aspiration System to investigate the murder of a famous and well-connected Brugen. It quickly becomes clear that this is no ordinary murder.   Each season follows the same general arc: There is at least one murder in every episode. By halfway through each season, it becomes apparent that murders which seemed unconnected are actually linked. Each season ends with M'Kay solving the murders and, in doing so, saves the life of someone they've gotten to know through the course of the season.   The heart of the series is the connection between M'Kay and Yar2. M'Kay is a quietly competent detective who is undoubtedly the epitome of what a Peacekeeper detective should be. Yar, on the other hand, is eager but incompetent. This friction is what gives the show its driving force.

Reception

The initial seasons of 'M'Kay and Yar' were wildly popular, bringing a charming mix of humour and tension along with strong Peacekeeper principles. People found it reassuring to know that there were detectives out there as competent as M'Kay.   After the first season, Peacekeeper Integrity put a lot more importance behind it, offering P'Ache Prime Media Outlets more insight into their innerworkings, in exchange for some input on storylines.   The first 15 - 20 seasons went from strength to strength, but when they started focusing on the P'Ache Star System, ratings quickly dropped, and despite attempts to spice up the plot lines3, nothing could resurrect them.

Controversies

When it first came out, there was something of an outcry from the Macrans who saw Yar as a poor characterisation of Macrans as incompetent. By season 3, PPMO has built this into the show, with Yar's parents berating him for being able to do other things he was more suited to4. He fought back, determined to stay by Peacekeeper M'Kay's side5.

Footnotes

  1. This is disputed, as ITBC Real Life ran for over a century. However, ITBC Real Life was presented by PPMO as a documentary, putting it out of the running.
  2. The fact that Peacekeeper G'Dar is always referred to as Yar is somewhere between an ongoing joke and a reminder of his position as someone who's less competent than the others.
  3. This included a raunchy scene between Yar and a Nibs and a storyline in which M'Kay got addicted to the Macran Pipe, and an entire episode which was a dream sequence after the pair were drugged on Time Dilation Tabs - Quantofluxitempadone.
  4. This didn't totally pacify the naysayers, but it was mostly old news by then.
  5. This is what they used to explain why Yar didn't attempt to climb the career ladder once in 25 years. It doesn't quite explain it, but it's the closest the show comes to it.
