Throughout their long life Saeki sired many children, a total of 17, and though his rule was one of peace and prosperity, his succession was anything but. Saeki's eldest child was 326 at the time of his passing, and in Saeki's own words, he wanted his heir to continue his peace for many years to come. Thus a civil war began, Saeki's eldest children supporting the 9th born, Yori Taroi, who was 132 at Saeki's passing, his youngest children supported Mai Taroi, who was 65 at the time of his passing.
Saeki officially did not name an heir before their passing, knowing that whatever decision he made, some of his children would be slighted, and wished his progeny to come to their own decision as to who would rule after him. The support for Yori came from the fact that he was the youngest child of Saeki's first wife, a proven warrior and politician with connections to the mainland nations. The support for Mai came from the fact that she was the youngest child, and thus the one most likely to outlive all her siblings, ensuring a long rule.
Both sides had reasons against the other, Yori's supporters viewed Mai has nothing more than a child. A pampered princess who had never fought pirates or any battles, never commanded or even wanted the responsibility of ruling. Mai's supporters viewed Yori as caring too much about the mainlanders, and appeasing them, claiming that any decision Yori would make would be beneficial more to the mainland nations than their own.
