Undead
The undead are a loose class of supernatural beings; those who have managed to survive past death. The undead can be recognized by their lack of need for vital signs such as a heartbeat, breathing, or temperature regulation. Undead cannot sustain themselves through the typical means of eating food. Instead, they live off of the life-force of those around them. Some are incorperal, but most have bodies. Some of those bodies are rotting, making them even easier to identify. As mystical beings, undead are susceptible to mystical forces. Holy artifacts can have extreme effects on them, and contact with orichalcum causes serious damage. The power of rituals may be boosted by using assistance or parts from high undead.
Holy artifacts
As mentioned previously, holy artifacts have drastic effects on undead. These effects can be beneficial or harmful, depending on the god behind the artifact. Inpu, sometimes called Anubis, protects the high undead he favors by extending a thin barrier over the skin of those who wear his symbol which dulls the impact of weapons. He also preserves the flesh of the rotting. Apep, sometimes called Apophis, favors vampires. Wearing his symbology makes a vampire blend into shadow easier, and boosts their magical abilities. The Morrígan favors high undead who manage their territories well, maintaining the people's prosperity and land's fertility. Wearing her symbology can offer useful visions. There are also legends of her manifesting to aid her favored in battle. The Keres are said to love vampires, and wearing their symbols seems to reduce how noticable the deaths they cause are. Hades loathes the undead, viewing them as cheaters. Contact with his symbols causes necrosis. Achlys supposedly favors vampires, but mostly tends to cause immense guilt over their dietary needs. She also grants poisonous saliva to the undead. Yahweh loathes undead, viewing them as a perversion. His symbols repel the undead.Types of undead
High undead
High undead retain their souls. As such, they're fully cognizant, and can do things such as think about their situation or appreciate the nice things in unlife. The most common species of high undead is the Vampire, although Liches are also high undead. High undead are also sometimes referred to as 'revenants'.
Lesser undead
The lesser undead lack souls, and behave in a predictable, mechanical manner. The most common lesser undead are ghouls, which are created by necromancers for cheap labor. Zombies were created when Dr. Wight attempted to create a stronger, more self-sustaining breed of ghoul.Spirits
Spirits, also called ghosts, are incorporeal undead. Since they lack a body, they have difficulty interacting with the physical world. Poltergeists are the most powerful, but also tend to burn themselves out quickly. Ghosts that don't use their energy for much tend to stick around longer. Without a brain, they're prone to confusion, especially after being around for a long period of time. Ghosts are prone to confusing people for those they knew in life, or repeating actions or sequences without apparent reason.Remove these ads. Join the Worldbuilders Guild
