The Sting of the Tirn

The dense and primordial forests of Arallfyd are home to a bewildering bestiary of predators natural and unnatural. Predators great and small call the forests home, but one of the most dangerous for the unwary traveller is the diminutive fae known as the Tirn.

The Tirn are a small breed of Fae, barely larger than a Robin in size. They dwell in hidden enclaves in the tree-tops, unseen by those travelling through the forest. They keep to themselves for the most part but if they feel their homes are in danger they will attack without hesitation. And, like most Fae, their motivations are often quite unfathomable to outsiders so it is quite difficult to discern reasons for hostility.

Special groups of Hunters will emerge from hiding, armed with bows that shoot tiny darts tipped with a poison harvested from plants and mushrooms that if they strike flesh cause a great many problems. Some induce nausea, loss of bowel control, crippling pain and seizures or even a swift but very painful death. Each tribe will have its favoured brew for their poison. Some tribes will favour non-lethal poisons, just potent enough to drive off interlopers. And others will gleefully concoct the most deadly and painful brews.

What makes it worse is that most of the time a victim will not know something is wrong. They may feel a sudden sharp pain in the back of their neck and think it a sting from an insect, only to double over in pain and scream as bones break or their organs liquefy.

What do they look like? I'm imagining sprites or pixies.

Like those, except a little more feral.
