The Realms of Caenar

Caenar. A world wrought of worlds. It is a world connected to numerous Realms, each separate but part of something greater.

 

ORIGINS

Caenar as a whole has endured numerous cataclysms that have brought ages crashing down and decimated all life. Even the Elnori, those most ancient beings, cannot say with true veracity the origins of the world or the Realms therein. Those few that cling to sanity say the Great Creator collected the broken fragments of worlds from across the cosmos and bound them to Caenar, saving the last vestiges of dying universes. Others like to say that the Realms are nothing more than creations of a bygone people whose arts were akin to Gods.

In truth, no one really knows.

 

THE HIGH PATH

The High Path is a network that allows travel between Caenar, the Realms and parts beyond. Portals are found across the Realms, sometimes blatant, other times hidden. Only those who know how to access the High Path can open these portals and have any hope of finding the desired destination. To access a portal and step blindly into it is madness for without the knowledge, who knows where the traveller may end up.

The towering veritcal city of Bel'Zanar is the site of a great many portals, leading some to speculate it is the heart of the High Path network. Thus it is common for whoever controls Bel'Zanar to wield considerable power with the ability to restrict access to the High Path. At present, with the fall of the Ascendant Empire, the Mesitori hold sway over Bel'Zanar.

 

THE REALMS

There are numerous Realms, too many to count in truth. It is perhaps easier to list the most prominent ones here.

 

  • Albion
Formerly called Avalon, a Realm once ruled by the Tuatha, it was conquered by a splinter group of the British Empire in the eighteenth to nineteenth century. Now it is given over to industry and an imperialistic regime driven to conquer more Realms.

  • Arallfyd
A wild Realm of deep forests, tundra and turbulent oceans. Civilisation is crude at most in this Realm and it is a primal and untamed place where life is a nigh-on constant survival.

  • Tallin
A broken Realm Tallin is composed of blasted wastelands and deserts where water is the most precious commodity and war a constant between rival city-states clinging to survival.

  • Zhel
A Realm renowned for its scholars and extensive libraries, Zhel is notoriously hostile to uninvited travellers.

  • Shuran
A Realm dominated by a vast ocean, Shuran is home to a variety of aquatic civilisations. It is considered one of the most difficult Realms to reach owing to most of the portals leading there being found beneath the waves. This has allowed some of the more ruthless of Shuran's civilisations to invade other Realms, emerging from bodies of water to raid and pillage before returning home.

  • Drentoth
A Realm that has long born the brunt of invasion from the Outside, its people are a stoic and grim folk who must fight to survive against nearly endless invasions from demonic horrors.

  • Dwilth
A mysterious and cursed Realm Dwilth is a place of darkness, of sprawling ruins and treasures but unimaginable horrors. Few dare risk travel to Dwilth so many are the stories of nightmare and terror.
