Infernal monitor

The Infernal monitor, a large reptilian creature, generally about 2 meters long from snout to tail. They have thick skin, and layers of insulating body fat. Though resembling ordinary lizards at first glance, their potent magical capabilities and destructive potential have earned them the classification of "monsters" by the esteemed Monster hunters Guild. These beings possess a supernatural ability to heat up their bodies, unleashing torrents of scorching flames from their backs, and can even belch a burning liquid akin to a flamethrower. Their aggressive behaviour when near humans and the tendency for their flames to get out of controls has given them a reputation as a dangerous creature.   Observations have shown that Infernal Monitor can devour charred and burned flesh without suffering any adverse effects, hinting at their ability to derive sustenance from even the most seared of meals.   Colonies of these fiery creatures can be found, numbering around 20 individuals, and their presence poses a significant threat to nearby settlements. Their propensity for aggressive behaviours and their capacity to unleash destructive fires make them a perilous force to reckon with.   Notably, the Infernal monitor are known to reach adulthood at about the 2-meter mark, yet their growth doesn't cease there. Similar to crocodiles, they continue to grow throughout their lives. Some instances have been reported of an "apex" Infernal monitor, reaching an astounding length of 20 meters. Whether this extraordinary size is a random genetic occurrence or the inevitable outcome for all monitors under optimal conditions remains a subject of debate. Some theorize that these apex monitors possess an accelerated growth rate, leading to their massive size.   The females of the Infernal monitor produce clutches of eggs relative to their size and as such apexes hold the potential to lay massive clutches of eggs. With this formidable reproductive capacity, the apex Infernal monitor poses a tremendous threat to the surrounding environments and settlements.   It is imperative for the hunters and scholars alike to study and monitor these creatures closely, as understanding their behaviours and reproductive habits is vital in safeguarding the lands from their fiery wrath.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Large and rotund reptilian bodies with quadrupedal stance. Capable of holding their bodies off the ground on their robust short legs. Their bodies are generally a dark grey/brown colour with patterning running along their backs in the form of blotchy circles of vibrant blues and purples. Their heads are large and wide with large mouths lined with small sharp, tricuspid teeth.

Genetics and Reproduction

Reproduction is done through clutches of eggs, with each egg being around the size of a human fist.

Growth Rate & Stages

Hatchlings are around 25cm and growing about 25cm each year after that. They reach sexual maturity in their 8th year. They have no upper growth limit though the larger they get the more food they will need.

Ecology and Habitats

They are known to inhabit the wilds of the titan lands, in which they are far from an apex creature. They found nests in vacant caves and other suitable structures, heating the space to scorching temperatures. This is belived to be done to mark their territory, safeguarding them from other suseptable creatures whilst also providing a good environment for their young. They also like to inhabit areas with volcanic activity seemingly attracted by the heat dispite the inherent danger. While capable of surviving fire, molten magma can still kill them. If no cave can be found they will stay out in the open but it dosen't seem to be preferable.

Biological Cycle

During the winter they hide away in their caves and go into a hybernation like state. Leading up to winter they will eat as much as possilbe, fattening up and seeking out materials ritch in magical energy to be able to heat their bodies and caves through the winter.   When laying eggs they will cover them in layers of ashes of things they burn to hide them and keep them warm.   Apex females when pregnant will often seek out a new place to lay her eggs establishing a new colony with the vast amount of offspring she produces.
Conservation Status
Have been bestowed the title of "monsters" by the monster hunters guild meaning they are actively hunted and exterminated from inhabited areas. They are known to inhabit the wilds of the titan lands and as such are not at any risk of extinction.
