the seeping dark

At the end of the great demon war, the Souldestroyer - the personification od The Void itself - had gained too much power to be cast back out of the world even by the united strength of mortals and spirits. In order to contain it, a prison was sought, one with magic powerful enough to bind the creature permanently. It was the dark elves that spoke up, offering their ancestral homeland as place of imprisonment. With no other options, the other races agreed.
However, despite the Dark Forest offering indeed the strongest, oldest and deepest protective magic in all the Land, it was not enough to fully contain the darkness of the souldestroyer. For although it could never leave the place, it managed to spread its darkness beyond the borders of its prison, bringing despair, hopelessness and terror to any and all that remained in its reach.
The remaining dark elves were forced to leave their ancestral homeland and search for new homes hundreds of miles away to escape the influence of the souldestroyer.

Manifestation

The seeping dark visually manifests as a dark haze or shadow that can often be seen settling over the Dark Forest. Sometimes this haze takes the shape of a dome, low clouds or high fog. The air feels colder the closer one gets to the forests edge, vegetation and plant life loosing colour and vigour.
Those spending too much time too close to the Dark Forest also often experience depressive thoughts and emotions, feeling tired, sad and without energy. They doubt themselves and their point in existence. Heavy hearts, nightmares and inner fears rising to the surface are common afflictions in the close proximity of the haze.
Sailers passing close to the northern shores of the Inner Sea have reported the haze to create misleading impressions, limit visibility and cause sudden weather events.

Localization

The seeping dark is only found around the edges of the dark forest. Most known is its influence to the east of the forest, where people still settled at times. Sailors however also tell tales of treacherous fogs of dark air where the Raging Mountains fall into the sea, creating the Black Cliffs.
