The World as We Know It
For 1500 years now the world has been consumed in Chaos and Law. Two species once again vying for supremacy wrought the world. The smallfolk hanging on by a thread, either bred and captured as Thralls for the Kingdom of Ostoria, or surviving by the skin of their teeth in a maze of tunnels lining up with the surface and sometimes even the Underdark.
The Giants Revel in their restored strength, their numbers beginning to swell again, and a branching empire of Asmund connects them all. They are merely keeping up with maintenance of the Dragonkind.
The Dragons hide and scramble to strategize how to overthrow the Jotun. Some hold out in the Spiraling Isles to the South, Giant's letting them be for the siege tactics prove difficult. The resilient Smallfolk band together, uniting and protecting their kind.
A Fragmented History
The world before is barely known except by Giant and Dragon skalds, and essentially conveys,
"The Giants were dwindling in number, and they once had ruled the world, contested only by fearsome Dragon's nearly their equal in strength alone.
One thousand years of war they wrought on the world, each convinced they were the true inheritors of this world. They thought themselves Gods, playing a game for a blue little marble.
What was once a Great and Powerful Kingdom was reduced to frozen wastes. Annam had secretly had another child with Othea, who he swore would return Ostoria to it's former glory.
However his Children failed a second time, and slew his son, who had been born a runt. For defying him once more he turned his back on the world and Giants became scarcer and scarcer until they were nothing but a myth. A handful of each variety being the last of it's kind.
In the year 100 BH, Annam's last son's descendant was part of a Storm Giant's ceremonial vision from Annam. The son was destined to Return Annam, and Ostoria to the World.
Asmund Hartsvale was raised by the last of the Giant's to be the most ruthless, educated, and equipped tactition the world had ever seen. He gathered the Giantkin who were nearly going extinct themselves from being hunted. Over 100 years Asmund assembled Legions of a combined 300,000 of his kin, and a few monstrous races willing to overthrow the Smallfolk.
It was a complete slaughter, waves of men standing over 12 feet tall marching through villages. Son's of Ruk looming at 50 feet tall hurling boulders the size of buildings. The smallfolk were destitute, barely holding out, and then the Dragons took notice.
This history is only known truly by the Giant's and Dragons. Their war playing out over 1500 years so far. The smallfolk have only snippets of their past, the longer lived of their kind slowly being hunted from existence.
