Hivante
Early Life
Hivante was a police officer on Fort Pitcairn who then worked his way up the Gurava party. He worked as Chief of Staff to Senator Appleton. After earning a reputation as charismatic and poised, Senator Appleton picked him to run for her seat when she retired. He won his seat in 2580 with a comfortable 50% of the votes.
Career
Senate Oversight Chair
In 2581, Senator Reiner Grumman, the most prominent voice in Gurava, put freshly elected Hivante forward for Oversight Committee chair. After much discussion, he was finally elected Oversight chair with support of the left wing bloc and Ravenheart. His detractors in the Isolationist, Frelsi Vanheim and Valiant parties cited his lack of political experience and youth, stopping short of calling him a diversity hire. His appointment catapulted the young senator's popularity and profile to the national level.
In his time as chair of the committee, Hivante led a number of major investigations.
2585 - Ensuring Transparency and Integrity in Foreign Investments Involving Republic's High Government Positions and Cabinet. Many saw this as specifically targeted at Treasury Secretary Sorenson (Republican Centrist Party) and Governor Pierce Moreland (RCP). The investigation revealed that Governor Moreland owed sizeable foreign debt and put into question his objectivity, but as he was not a cabinet minister, no action was taken.
2589 - Cause of the end of the Committee hearings on Earth against Governor Tiberus Corvo. The investigation ended up bringing to light a deal with Senator Ostor Malouf (SDP) who had agreed to weigh on the Diet members of his party to get the investigations to stop. This became a minor scandal in the 2590 Republic Election, adding to the pressure for Governor Corvo to "resign" from the isolationist ticket.
2597 - Investigation into Tresury Sec Axille (RHC), which led to the arrest of Secretary Tiago, as well as reputational damage to Ravenheart and President Carrero. Senator Hivante's conclusions were:
"the Oversight committee finds that the Mina Carrero administration in general and the Treasury Dept under Secretary's Tiago and Axille in specific, used the letter of the law in order to protect their own political agenda.
It is clear that Secretary Tiago has no respect for the law or due process and he faces a trial for contempt of the Legislature. Secretary Axille, whilst more law abiding, was still more interested in protecting allies than making sure that the law was followed.
President Carrero, whilst not directly implicated, was also disinterested in enforcing the tax laws of the Republic and ensuring that fairness was done, costing the Republic billions of adjusted dollars, which could have been spent on a wide variety of things."
Floor Leader
He resigned his role as Chair of the Oversight Committee in 2600 after Gurava joined a coalition to form the Walt Schilling administration, citing that the chair of the Oversight Committee should not be from a party that is in government. As floor leader for Gurava, he was considered the party's leading figure, especially when it came to defending the rights of Psionic individuals in the Republic.
In 2610, he raised a formal challenge to the Psionic Regulation bill introduced by Terra Undivided. The controversial bill was successfully defeated in the Senate. He would continue to lead the opposition for similar bills during the Canazarro administration, challenging the president's 2615 executive order in the Senate and getting it overturned.
In 2620, He worked with Finn and Senator Julianna Knottman to ensure that the SDP-Gurava merger would work smoothly.
Impressed with young representative Connor Williams' performance in the SDP convention of 2620, he picked the young representative to take his senate seat after his retirement.
