Gurava

Gurava was a major political party formed in the 25th century

Origins

Gurava was a left wing political party first formed in 2485 as a reaction to the end of the Zzenddi War. Many Terrans felt that there had been too much violence and called for an environmentalist and pacifist political party to be formed.   "Gurava" was an Indirian word for peace and reconciliation.

Party Platform

Gurava was founded with the principles of environmentalism, pacifism and liberal values. Its platform eventually stabilized to be:
  • Freedom of movement and expression for all citizens
  • Freedom from financial oppression. Housing, food and education are natural rights, not commodities
  • Pacifism: powerful fleets and armies do not protect people, only make war more likely
  • Environmentalism: the habitable worlds are a gift and should be protected and honoured

Leadership

Gurava is not organized as a top down party and the local affiliate parties have a fair amount of leeway in how they are organized. The Federal Party makeup is open to elections every two years and it is in the party constitution that no one is allowed to be General Chairman for more than 4 years in a row.

Government

A party on the traditionally leftmost edge of the political spectrum, Gurava nevertheless secured a place in several coalitions throughout the Republic's history.   2540 - The Noah Averssen administration: Haiss Taggart held the position of Attorney General, and after the reshuffle Patton Rosewood was named at the Ministry of Intelligence.   2560 - The Herrick Knottman administration: Senator Reiner Grumman held the Foreign Ministry and Haymer Doherty the Defence Ministry.   2565 - The Harmony Meagher adminstration: Reiner Grumman held his post of Foreign Secretary and Katherine Fererreo held the post of Attorney General   2600 - The Walt Schilling administration: Shuresh DaSilva was Attorney General and Dr Grogan Westfield Minister of the Interior. After the reshuffle, Dr Westfield was named Foreign Secretary and Mathilda Tremont took over the Ministry of the Interior.

Joint lists and alliances

During the 2520 Republic Election, Gurava endorsed the Social Democratic Party. A decade later, ahead of the 2530 election, Gurava agreed to be part of a Joint-List with the Social Democratic Party. They renewed this affiliation in 2540 after serving in coalition with the SDP during the Averssen Presidency.   That alliance was broken in 2550 by the SDP citing concerns around conspiracy-adjacent speeches from Senator Reiner Grumman on the campaign trail. This led to a rapprochement with the party Librarius during the 2560 Republic Election.   Decades later, the historical alliance was renewed in 2600 led by Payden Hickock, leading to the election of President Walt Schilling. In 2610, the Joint List was established again, led by Senator Marise Cho, however when the SDP brought the Republican Centrist Party into the Joint List, Gurava split from the alliance, citing unreconcilable differences with the RCP on Foreign Policy and the conduct of the war with the Dhau Empire.
