Frostwyrm

An ancient Dragon who occupies Stormspire, the highest peak of the Crowning Ranges. By mutual protection treaty, it is allied with Dwightholt.   It maintains the aspect of Frost, and is not known to use any other, though it is said that when it becomes old enough, it wishes to adopt an alchemical aspect as well.

Personal history

As the first Dwarves explored the Crowning Ranges, their relationship with the native dragons was never cordial. Frostwyrm was not alive in those earliest days, but was well aware of the hostility between the two species. When it reached sufficient age, it laid claim to the Stormspire, knowing that it must defend the territory not only from other dragons seeking the same height, but from dwarves wishing to delve the mountain and its riches. Frostwyrm adopted a strategy of proactive malevolence, attacking any being that came within its range.   For many centuries, the mountain was shunned by the Dwarves despite their desire to plunder it, and it was generally held that only a great deed of heroic violence could remove the threat and secure the mountain. But in 3998 BC, the clever and wise kopf of the Dwightsippe, Gilliam Sidwe, concocted and adopted an alternative plan. He directed a band of envoys to carefully approach the mountain with a gift of food and cultural artifacts, by which to offer to make parley with the dragon. Frostwyrm, though suspicious, accepted the offer and arranged for a meeting with Sidwe. In their parley, Sidwe offered a great portion of his family's wealth, mostly ingots of Ruacuprum and Orichalcum, explaining that more of these could be obtained by mining the crust beneath Stormspire, to the benefit of both sides.   At the time, the proceeding was held in great disdain and scorn among Dwarfkind, and the parley was widely known as "Sidwe's folly". However, to the surprise of most (including many members of the Dwightsippe), Frostwyrm accepted the offer and relinquished control of the lower portions of the mountain for Dwarven settlement.   Dwightholt was established one month after finalizing the treaty, and to this day periodic payments of precious metals are sent to the peak. The pieces have been fashioned into a raiment that grants the dragon magical protection from a variety of potential harms. In exchange, it searches the territory for any activity of saboteurs or scouts from neighboring Holts or other hostile parties. This activity has been the undoing of several ploys.
