Swords of Varentes

The Swords of Varentes are one of the largest and most respected mercenary hosts on the Velvet Coast. Founded in 189 IE by Lucio Varentes, they rose to fame during the Varen Campaigns, where they broke repeated Beastman incursions threatening the Coast’s caravan routes. Known for their drilled pike formations, iron discipline, and loyalty to their captain.

Structure

  • Pike Regiments (2,500): Core of the company, trained to hold against both cavalry and monstrous charges.
  • Crossbowmen (800): Skilled marksmen, often deployed in staggered lines behind the pike wall.
  • Light Cavalry (500): Scouts and raiders, used to harass enemies and cover retreats.
  • Camp Followers & Auxiliaries (~200): Engineers, smiths, and surgeons, essential to campaign survival.
  • Culture

The Swords are famous for their iron discipline. Drills are relentless, pay is fair, and punishments are harsh but consistent. Soldiers are bound by loyalty to Lucio personally, who is seen as both a commander and protector. Many veterans have served with the Swords for the length of its existence, making the company as much a family as a fighting force.

    History

  • The Varen Campaigns (189–194 IE): Defended Tiberia’s trade routes against Beastman incursions. At Cora Vale, broke a horde three times their size.
  • Frontier (196 IE): Held forts against Holzen sponsered raiders.
  • Velvet Coast (201 IE): Maintained neutrality during the Mevania–Floria War, defending minor ports and caravan roads instead of joining either side.
  • The Pike Wall of Varen
