Copse of Memories

In Maruvian culture, the Copse of Memories is the traditional memorial and burial grounds for the Arakhi Rangatir'nghére of the Western Woods.   There are three major Copses of Memories active, in which nearly all modern Arakhi Rangatir'nghere are memorialized:
  • The Copse of Preservation, northeast of Maunganiti
  • The Copse of Reclamation, within the macrofungal biome of the Circle of the Myceliads
  • The Copse of Transcendence, south of Aajintéa
  • Execution

When an Arakhi Rangatir'nghere dies, the staff they received upon their ascension to service is ceremonially planted in the ground of the Copse of Memories, and their name, full title, and service is spoken by a close follower or relative of theirs for what is traditionally the last time. This causes the staff to sprout branches and leaves and grow at a rapid pace into a tree of the wood from which it was made. Any crystals or other additions to the staff are swallowed by the tree as it grows over the course of the night, reaching roughly sixty feet tall by dawn. These trees are impervious to rot or disease and venerated as sacred monuments; even if one were to be cut down, it would destroy the axe-wielder and everything around them in an explosion of celestial radiance.   Depending on local traditions, the body of the Arakhi Rangatir'nghere may be buried beneath the tree before it is planted or placed alongside the freshly planted staff in a ritual sky burial. In subcultures that practice cremation, the ashes of the body are typically scattered at the base of the tree once it is fully grown.

    Components and tools

Unlike a Rangatir'tiären, which may be kept as an heirloom by relatives, mentees, or holy orders upon the Arakhi Rangatir'nghere's death according to their wishes, the Staff of the Arakhi Rangatir'nghere must be recovered and planted at all costs. Such cultural and spiritual importance is placed on this that, if the Arakhi Rangatir'nghere falls in battle, their comrades will often give their lives to protect the staff and return it to a Copse.
