Aos Si
The Aos Si are, and were, a fey-descended race of sentient creatures in the world of Omne. The majority of current-day Aos Si reside in the Feylands.
Basic Information
Ecology and Habitats
The Aos Si are capable of settling in nearly any environment, though they are more highly concentrated in temperate zones.
Due to the Aos Si's passive emission of Source magic, the species maintains an antithetical relationship to their habitat. As opposed to the Aos Si adapting to their environment, the environment adapts to the Aos Si's presence. For instance, the forest around a hag's hut will, over the course of many years, transform into a bog.
Behaviour
Aos Si have been observed to display an extremely high emotional capacity. When a service is done to them, they will sing praises to the subject of their joviality. Conversely, if they feel slighted, an Aos Si may be thrown into a violent fit of rage, cursing the very ground that is tread by the perpetrator.
Many Aos Si, particularly those residing in the Feylands, are infamous for striking questionably worded deals with outsiders. These deals bind both the Aos Si and the outsider in a Source Bond, the consequences of which can vary greatly if left unfulfilled. Cultural research has implied the Aos Si see the striking of a deal with outsiders as a complex game, the purpose of which is to both entertain and satiate the Aos Si's extreme nature.
Deal-striking between two Aos Si is viewed as a far more serious matter, bearing disastrous results for the offending party if broken. Even an archfey may be torn from their position of power if they fail to uphold their end of a bargain.
Additional Information
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
In addition to their human-comparable senses, the Aos Si possess an intrinsic ability to detect the type and origin of Source magic via aromatic identification. This sense of smell is especially acute in areas where their species is highly concentrated.
Aos Si who hold positions of power may also possess an ability to "see" the obligations a person holds, the detail of which scales directly with both their knowledge of the perceived and the authority of the perceiver. In example, a courtesan who has only just met an individual might identify they swore an oath to a king, while an archfey who has known the perceived for a time can parse that the oath was that of lifelong service.
Civilization and Culture
History
The Aos Si are speculated to have first arrived in Omne during the Age of Awakening at approximately the same time as the Edhellen, though which came first is a matter of contentious debate. The method used by both species to first establish a connection between Omne and the then-primordeal Feywilds is unknown, but the act of doing so is theorized to have severely weakened the planar boundary between these two realms in the Feylands.
According to current-era Aos Si folklore, the ancestral Aos Si established a foothold in the Feylands with the intent to enrich the floral diversity of Omne during its early years. Conversely, Elven records detailing their ancestor's (the Edhellen) arrival claim an unknown disease plagued the Feywild, prompting both species to seek refuge. This theory is the more supported of the two, as studies of Goblin genealogy, a known Fey descendant, as a product of plague-infected Aos Si.
Regardless of origin, the Aos Si have spread across the surface of Omne at this point, though the vast majority of the species remains in the Feylands.
