Everyone Has Magic

Written by elean0rarose

Magic is as commonplace in Olrion as daisies are in a meadow. It was gifted to all the peoples by Drig from the times when the gods were creating the world.

There is one thing, however: most of this magic is entirely mundane. While there are indeed powerful mages who have the talents to master the elements and transmogrify parts of reality, the vast majority of people are without these powers.

Instead, they humbly get by with one, perhaps two, little talents. Perhaps they can make a flame small enough to light a candle or fire by snapping their fingers. Perhaps they can talk to mice and mice only. Perhaps they can cast up a light emitting ball into the palm of their hand and so never have to waste money on torches. Perhaps their thumbs turn green when gardening and allow them to fertilise the earth.

Those gifted with more spectacular and wide-ranging abilities can do all of the flashy magic you might typically think of when you hear the term: fireballs, healing, and receiving prophecies or divining the future (although, it should be said, with both the answers are always vague and up to interpretation, as well as subject to change based on people’s actions—there is no such thing as fate in Olrion, after all).

The distribution of who get what appears to be totally random to mortals, but seeing as the gods work on a much higher level of consciousness (not to mention having a completely different set of morals), there is thought to be some kind of reasoning behind everyone’s innate abilities.

Magic, then, is baked into the very core of Olrion. Much of it is useless except in certain circumstances, but the people do like to show off their party tricks whenever they have the chance.
