Beginning

Synopsys

 

The adventure starts on the morning of a normal day in the town of Barlo , Kentucky . It was not to remain a normal day, the coal miners were on strike from the West Kentucky Coal Company. Working conditions were terrible and unsafe. There was not a family in Barlo that had not had someone injured in the mines. If that wasn't bad enough the pay was below standard for this type of work.

The players work for the West Kentucky Coal Company as Loggers. Since they are not miners they were not obliged to participate in the strike. They are called Beamers because they log for beams to support the new mine shafts and shore up the tunnels. The mine engineers order certain sizes of logs, specifying thickness and length to add support to the new tunnels. The company sends a flatbed truck up to the campsite every other day to pick up new fresh-cut timber and deliver food and supplies to the beamers.

The camp consists of an army surplus canvas tent for each player and a larger mess tent for preparing meals and repairing tools.  They also have a mule-drawn wagon to haul the sections of lumber ordered by the mine engineers. Daisy and Betsy are the hardy and strong mules that pull the wagon.

The truck from the Coal Company did not arrive as scheduled today, which is a rare event as the truck has always been on time in the past.

Along about 8 am, just after a breakfast of bacon, fried eggs, taters, grits, and coffee, the players start to notice a strange smell of sulfur in the air. Moments later two men come into view at the edge of the clearing. Their condition was shocking, smoke was rising from both men through holes in their work clothes. Their eyes glowed a strange red-orange color like the eyes of a lit jack-0-lantern. They vaguely resembled coal miners from Old number seven. As the ghostly miners slowly advanced the players could see that they meant them harm. Give the players a chance to regognize Pinky and Eddie

The players will likely defeat the animated miners. In a last gasp, Pinky will tell the players to save his "little girl" from the inner dark. Sarah is currently at the schoolhouse being prepared for the inner dark by the possessed Anne Messer.

The Intrusion level goes up to 2. The players should go to the schoolhouse to save Sarah or they could decide to to go up the mountain to the Old Number 7 mine.
