Greyhawk, Domain of
The lands governed from the Free City of Greyhawk are collectively known as the Domain of Greyhawk. This domain was comprised of the city itself, the town of Hardby, the Selintan River valley, the greater part of the Cairn Hills, the northern Wild Coast (containing Narwell and Safeton), and parts of the Gnarley Forest and Abbor-Alz.
History
Greyhawk, taking its name from the local grey hawks, originated as a Selintan River trading post specializing in wood and woven goods before developing strong textile and meat-packing industries. It came under the rule of an Oeridan warlord who became the "Landgraf of the Selintan," a title whose lineage was strengthened by a political marriage with Hardby. This formed the Landstadt of Selintan, or Domain of Greyhawk.
By the 4th century CY, Greyhawk was dominated by the Great Kingdom of Aerdy, but its influence waned by the 3rd century CY due to the Overkings' corruption. Around 310 CY, the mage Zagyg's effective, albeit eccentric, rule brought prosperity, earning Greyhawk the title "Gem of the Flanaess." His sudden disappearance in 421 CY led to the abolition of the Landstadt and the rise of the Free City's Directing Oligarchy in 498 CY, officially declared by Lord Mayor Paerinn.
The subsequent loss of Hardby and the Wild Coast caused an economic decline, which was reversed in the latter half of the 6th century by the discovery of treasure in Castle Greyhawk and nearby dungeons, sparking a significant gold rush.

Military
The military of the Domain of Greyhawk, though the Lord Mayor is the ultimate authority, is usually under the operational command of the Captain General of the Watch. This highest-ranking military officer also serves on the city's Directing Oligarchy. In 591 CY, Tigran Gellner holds this crucial role. The Greyhawk Militia is organized into several key units: the Cairn Hills Force, led by Commander Schinus Balint; the Mountaineer Militia, notable for its griffon riders and commanded by Carstane Geronten; the Hardby Marines, under the leadership of Commander Wilbrem Carister; the Narwell Headhunters; the Safeton Border Guards, led by Commander Turin Deathstalker; and the "Water Rats," who maintain four daily patrols along the Selintan River, ensuring a regular presence throughout its navigable stretches.
Religion
The Free City of Greyhawk is home to temples and shrines venerating a wide pantheon of deities, including Beory, Boccob, Celestian, Corellon Larethian, Ehlonna, Fharlanghn, Garl Glittergold, Heironeous, Istus, Kord, Kurell, Lirr, Moradin, Norebo, Obad-Hai, Olidammara, Osprem, Pelor, Pholtus, Procan, Ralishaz, Rao, Saint Cuthbert, Trithereon, Ulaa, Wee Jas, Xerbo, Yondalla, and Zilchus. Public worship of evil deities and fiends is forbidden within the city, though recent times have seen the clandestine rise of cults dedicated to Incabulos, Iuz, Nerull, and Vecna. In contrast to this urban religious landscape, the settlements throughout the Domain of Greyhawk recognize and worship an even more extensive range of deities.
