The Association for Refugees, Orphans, and Displaced Persons
The Mage War displaced tens of thousands of people, many of them children who were separated from their families or orphaned entirely.
Started by Thiwyan members of the Abercych Traders' Guild, who took on the responsibility for children moving children from the countryside to the walled cities for protection from the soldiers and other monsters roaming the countryside during the War.
Each child given to the Guild was provided with food, clean clothes and shoes, and assigned to a caretaker. They were taken north by road, river, and rail to Abercych, which remained neutral though the war. Initially, the children were settled in orphanages in the the Abercych capital, Teiros, but these organisations quickly became overwhelmed, so the Association began to place children within the Traders' Guild, then - as families began to arrive - with other, allied guilds, before hiving off into a public charity, separate from the guild system.
Since the end of the War, the Association has shifted to funding the return of people to their homes - although this is a much less glamorous and much more expensive task, and funding for the project is not as abundant as it was for relocating them in the first place.
Unfortunately, the Association has found itself with a large number of children whose families have not claimed them - some simply did not survive, but the material damage caused by the War means that many families no longer have the means to support their children and believe that they are better, and safer, in the cities.
Public Agenda
Funded by public subscription, the Association for Refugees, Orphaned, and Displaced Persons was set up to help place children with temporary or permanent homes, and later expanded to help re-settle entire families.
