Sand Wyrm
Giant serpent like monsters that burrow under the sands of the Northern Wastes. Related to the Marine Wyrm, but much more mobile, the Sand Wyrm burrows underneath desert sands in search of prey.
Basic Information
Anatomy
Smaller yet more mobile than their marine cousins, Sand Wyrms usually reach lengths of around 8m, and can quickly burrow through soft surfaces with their front mandibles. These have evolved into an optimal design for digging, with concave ends. Powerful muscles drive the mandibles into a rapid spinning motion, which also serves as the Sand Wyrms main defence in combat.
Ecology and Habitats
Mainly found in the Wastes, where they are adapted to burrow under the soft sands with ease.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Obligate carnivore that hunts using simple ambush tactics on surface dwelling prey.
Behaviour
Lacking any real intelligence, the Sand Wyrm operates almost solely on its highly evolved sense of touch. As desert life is harsh and has little diversity, if a Wyrm senses vibration, it is almost certain to be one of its usual prey items.
Additional Information
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
Small, almost vestigial eyes only serve to detect light levels, Sand Wyrms have small needle-like receptors which can be used to sense even the slightest vibrations. The caveat to this incredible sense of touch is the Sand Wyrm's inability to perceive new input while digging or moving. Because of this, it is essentially blind until it stops moving.
