Corath

The 4th planet in the Novus System, and the first self-sustaining colony in the Cooperative. Naturally habitable to humans and neighbouring Novus, the planet now hosts a permanent population of over 4 billion.

Geography

An oceanic world with a surface cover of over 90% water. The remaining landmass consists of two small continents and various islands. Corath's atmosphere is a breathable nitrogen-oxygen mixture, with a pressure 1.3 times that of Novus.

Ecosystem

Before the arrival of humans, Corath's global ocean hosted a plethora of multicellular aquatic life. Relatively primitive fauna had yet to colonize the pockets of dry land, as there had not been ample time or pressure to do so. Photosynthesising plants were the first to make landfall, and spread into a sparse groundcover resembling strands of moss.

Localized Phenomena

Corath's lack of a stabilizing natural satellite has led to a varying axial tilt and absense of tides. While deep oceanic life remains mostly unaffected, suface conditions are less stable. Changing currents and climates on land make it difficult for life to adapt, contributing to the mostly barren landscape.

Climate

Corath's ocean acts as the primary mediator in terms of climate. Resistant to drastic temperature changes, underwater life generally enjoys a comfortable 14 degrees centigrade. On land however, the planet's shifting axis causes wild fluctuations in climate. The equatorial continent experiences the least change and is generally more hospitable. The southern continent remains too unstable to support a large biosphere, and only a select few lichen-analogues survive here.

Fauna & Flora

Native life on Corath is strikingly similar to that on Novus, albeit less evolved. Popular theories speculate panspermia, that ancient microbes originating on Novus managed to colonize its sister planet eons ago. On a cellular level, carbon based life on Corath is nearly identical to that on Novus, only a few hundred million years less evolved. A diverse yet primitive underwater ecosystem thrives, while plants are the sole inhabitants on terrestrial land.

Natural Resources

The abundance of water on Corath has led to it becoming the largest power generation hub in the Cooperative. Ocean water is filtered and fed into vast reservoirs, which fuel massive fusion plants dotting the coastlines. A small percentage of this energy is all that is needed to sustain the colony's needs, the rest is exported throughout the Cooperative.

History

Known throughout history as a sister planet to Novus. Many ancient myths depict Corath as a blissful paradise, where the deceased live in perpetual utopia. Early telescopic surveys confirmed Corath's habitability, which bolstered the drive for exploration and colonization.

Tourism

With the relative ease of interplanetary travel, The Ocean Lord's Respite has become one of the most sought after destinations in the system, if not the entire Cooperative. Situated well within the global ocean and well away from any terrestral settlements, The Ocean Lord's Respite sits upon a long dead supervolcano, jutting kilometers above sea level.
