Nova
INTRO
Nova is the main character in this world, in a story of the same name. I've mostly been working on the setting so far, so Nova himself is still pretty underdeveloped. The most important thing is that he's a Star– a child of the Sun and Moon, sent to earth to teach humanity something important about themselves. Every Star has a domain– a specific emotion or aspect of humanity that they rule over. Nova has yet to figure out what his domain actually is, so he's very much struggling with his sense of identity and purpose. Not to mention the fact that no Stars have been seen in centuries, and as it turns out, it's pretty difficult to find time for self-discovery when there are a bunch of violent, power-hungry mages who are very determined to make sure the Stars never return.
I haven't had a chance to develop Nova's personality much yet, I just know that he is very, very stressed out all the time. He doesn't know how to do anything casually– he feels everything very deeply (so basically he's fantasy emo). Constantly contemplating your place in the universe comes with the territory of literally being a god with a designated purpose. Now, if he just knew what that purpose was, things would be a lot easier.

BACKSTORY
Nova was born in the Sky City, where he lived up until the beginning of the main story. He was the first Star ever born without a twin, and thus, his birth was met with much unease. Not to mention that the Sky City's general attitude towards Stars is quite negative. Because of this, his parents were not too keen on raising him. He ended up living on the streets when he was quite young, and most likely only survived to adulthood because of his inherent connection to his true parents, the Sun and Moon. He has the unique ability to talk to them directly-- sort of, anyway. It's vague communication, not actual verbal conversations. Thanks to this connection, Nova understood that he was a star from a very young age, but he still doesn't understand what his domain is supposed to be. Because he doesn’t have a counterpoint, he wasn’t able to learn about it from them. He has no idea what he was actually sent to do. And to his frustration, the Sun and Moon are no help in answering his questions. He doesn't know if being born without a twin is a mistake or a bad omen of some kind. He really doesn’t understand much of anything, only that he is different, that there is something that he needs to do, and that he has to do it alone.
Having no idea where to even start with figuring out his purpose, Nova ignored his destiny for a long time. Even if he wanted to pursue it, there wasn't much he could do. Without the support of the city's leaders or even a family, life was quite difficult for him. Opportunities for work were scarce, so he ended up turning to crime more often than not. The only honest work he was able to find was in the incredibly dangerous profession of scavenging supplies from the buildings on the edges of the city before they crumbled away into the void. Many people who lived close to the edge ended up leaving in a hurry, hiring people to retrieve their things afterward. He didn't mind the danger much. The higher the risk, the higher the pay, and he was desperate. Besides, has was quick. He was confident he could get out in a hurry if he needed to. There was just one problem.
Recently, the Sun and Moon have started to get frustrated with Nova's refusal of the call. By this point in their lives, most Stars already had a firm understanding of their domains and had begun spreading their teachings, while he had barely started. Their gentle nudges weren't proving effective, so they started to employ more direct means; namely, pulling him into dreamlike visions in the middle of the day to talk to him directly. These visions, while at least somewhat effective, were quite inconvenient for him. The moment they decided they wanted to talk, his physical body became completely incapacitated while his celestial form was pulled away; sort of like the avatar going into the spirit world, only out of his control. He did his best to continue to ignore them, but the visions were getting more and more frequent. He was on one of his scavenging jobs when he was suddenly pulled into one. All of the previous occurrences had happened when he wasn't really doing anything, so he assumed the pattern would continue. He never thought his parents would interrupt him at such an inconvenient time. He was wrong.
As it had so many times before, Nova's body collapsed to the ground as his mothers called him for a talk. Only this time, he was in an abandoned building on the edge of the world. He let it happen. He wasn't too close to the edge, so even if it started crumbling, he'd have plenty of time to get out. Or so he thought. He was in the middle of a particularly tense conversation with the Sun when the starry surface he stood on suddenly began to violently shake. Back on the island, people were calling out warnings; yelling at the scavengers to run, get out of there, the Crumbling is here. Nova heard none of it, only his own cries as pieces of the sky fell down around him. Frantically, he looked back to the Sun, hoping desperately that she would tell him what was going on, that she would save him. He had just enough time to look at her face-- a face just as terrified as his own-- before the ground shattered beneath him.
And in a streak of burning light, a star fell to earth.
