Sky City

Land:

  • Consists of one large island floating in the sky, scooped out of the earth long ago; started as a city in the jungle on the southern ocean island; general topography stayed the same, mostly flat with a wide variety of plant life, though much of it has since been cleared away to make room for buildings. Now it is almost entirely residential, with very little nature remaining.
  • The Crumbling: over time, the magic holding the city aloft has begun to wane, and the edges of the island are slowly crumbling away, forcing residents closer to the center. Over the past ten years, approximately 30% of the island's surface area has been lost.

People:

  • The people of the sky city are descended from all nations and have greatly homogenized since, so there is no distinct look they have. The citizens have all ranges of skin tones, eye colors, and hair types. Due to their mixed heritage, medium brown skin and somewhat textured hair are the most common.
  • Clothing
  • Jewelry
  • Due to the thin air of the sky city, the people of the sky city have adapted to require far less oxygen. When exposed to the oxygen-rich air of the mainland, they seem to have an almost superhuman endurance by comparison

Society:

  • Government– Monarchy? Leaders definitely aren't elected, the same people have been running the city since its founding. Not necessarily a family, but definitely a small in-group of people that's nearly impossible to infiltrate
  • Economy– I have no idea. they probably just force everyone to share everything and exploit blue-collar workers for everything they need; I don't really know where they're getting resources either, there's not much space for farmland or anything, they can't fish, they can't mine without destabilizing the city even more… maybe they just artificially produce everything with magic, idk.
  • Settlements– Just one singular city that takes up the entirety of the island; architecture started as a mixture of that of all nations, but over time, a distinct style has cemented itself.
Culture-
History-
  • Founding and Ascension

The sky city started on the ground, in the jungles of the southern ocean island. It began with a small group of people who believed they were better than the gods, and wanted to rise above them. Over time, they spread their philosophy across all nations, bringing their supporters into the city. Once they had gathered enough people to be a self-sufficient society, their greatest mages got together and lifted the whole city, along with a sizable chunk of the earth underneath it, into the sky, hoping to ascend beyond the stars. This was hundreds of years ago, and there has been no contact with the city since. Those on the ground world have varying beliefs on what might've happened to them– some believe they achieved their goal and became gods. Others think they were struck down for their hubris. Many think they never even existed at all, and the city is only a myth. The only evidence of their existence is the nearly perfectly round crater left behind where the city once stood.

  • Early Sky Era

Truthfully, the sky city still exists, and it was not struck down, nor did it reach the stars. They went as high as they could, but at a certain point, the mages were devoting too much of their energy to maintaining a barrier around the city, filled with warm, oxygen-rich air, to ascend any further. So they continued to hover in place, and have been wandering the sky ever since. For generations, the city thrived. As time went on, their population grew, and many more mages were born, allowing them to devote more time and energy to arcane advancements.

  • Internal Conflict

Over time, the ideology of the city’s inhabitants has changed. The city may have originally been founded for people who don't like the gods, but you can't breed out opinions, so future generations aren't necessarily like that. There are a few things I could do with this: One, there are once again differing stances on the gods and there's a lot of internal conflict within the city; If I want the government to be super extreme, maybe sympathizing with the gods is a crime; Or two, the government is putting out propaganda that the gods are evil or something (maybe they say they went to the sky to escape a bloody conflict on the ground world, and now they can't return cause the gods destroyed it), so everyone still hates them, even if it's for different reasons than they used to; This would certainly make things extra interesting for Nova when he finds out he's a star, though it wouldn't take long on the ground to find out they were lying; slight problem with this though, if he's been fed all this propaganda, he wouldn't really know the intricacies of how stars work (domains, having a twin, etc.), which would delay the internal conflict on those subjects. I guess that'd be a problem either way, even if the government isn't lying about the gods they still probably wouldn't be talking about the gods much if they don't follow them.

  • The Crumbling

Unfortunately for the sky city, internal conflict is far from their only problem. The magic holding up the city is waning, and for the past 10 years or so, the edges of the island have been crumbling away, forcing residents closer to the center. Overcrowding is becoming a problem as the amount of livable space decreases, and citizens are growing panicked. No one is entirely sure what exactly is causing this. Most assume the mages holding it up are simply tiring, or there are not enough of them. But even with every mage in the city assigned to maintaining the island's structure, it still shrinks every day (2 ft a day would be about a mile and a half over the course of 10 years. Is that enough to be significant, or too much? Idk how big fantasy cities should be). The larger pieces that fall are thought to be meteors by those on the ground world, though they can't explain the things they sometimes find in the wreckage. It should also be noted that the fact that so many mages are being enlisted to hold back the Crumbling is not public information. The government continues to assure its citizens that the problem is being handled.

As the Crumbling continues, more and more buildings on the edge have been abandoned as their owners flee towards the center. A few very reckless people have taken up the extremely dangerous profession of scavenging supplies from these buildings. Many people who leave their homes in a hurry end up hiring these people to retrieve their things.
