Great House Morwen

"[...]not the wisest and not the strongest either, but certainly the smartest. To use the war to break away from Hallia like that. That's why I'm proud to be in service to House Morwen and not any of those warmongering hallian houses." - a common saying among House Morwen retainers
House Morwen was always something of a trailblazer. First to swear fealty to Great House Missar as a great house, they were also the first to break away from Halliaas as sovereign state, founding the kingdom of Morwen. While shurrans themselves, Morwens cared more about improving the land they already had, than mindless conquer. Out of all the Great Houses of Hallia, Morwen alone maintaned good relations with the northern kingdoms, resulting in profitable trade routes, first on land and eventually as shipbuilding advanced, by sea.

Structure

The house of Morwen consists of the Morwen family and their retainers and enforcers. The house is led by the family head, the Lord or Lady. They must always be a fimily member, thus a direct descendant of the chieftains of Shurrah. Their's is the final word in all house decisions. The head is supported by a five member council, called Morwen Council. The five members are, General, Treasurer, Ambassador, Arch Builder and Arch Gardener.
  • General: Leader of the Morven Army, their duty is to keep the army well-supplied and well-trained, also to advise the head in military decisions. This role is often filled by another family member.
  • Treasurer: Keeper of the treasury, their duty is to keep the Morwen treasury stocked and to advise the head in economy related decisions.
  • Ambassador: Emissary of the house, their duty is to maintain foreign relations and to advise the head in these matters.
  • Arch Builder: Carried over from old Shurrah, builders are responsible to the placement and oversseing the building process for all settlements, fortresses, harbors, mines and anything else that requires engineering. The arch builder is the leader of the builder's guild and mostly acts independently, however, they are required to keep the head of the house up-to-date with all the issues and proceedings related to building.
  • Arch Gardener: Another occupation from Shurrah, gardeners are responsible for land development. There is no desert in Hallia which would require a gardener's expertise, so they mainly work on planning the agriculture and forestry. The gardener guild is led by the Arch Gardener, direct advisor to the house head regarding agricultural decisions
Below the council is the rest of the noble family. These mebers are largely left to their own devices, but most of them are happy to assist in house business in whatever way they can.   Retainers and enforcers are beholden to the members of the house, they are responsible for carrying out the orders of the nobles. Their occupation can range from craftsmen, housekeepers, majordomos, to mercenaries, spies and traders. Anything that requires special talent.   The lowest rank, much like with all the other houses, is that of servants. They are the peasants, house servants, farmers or crofters. Not officially members of the house, they still live under Morwen rules. Anyone below them is considered an outlaw.

Culture

House Morwen believes in progress, which is quite uncharacteristic of shurrans. Their goal isn't to conquer and rule, but to improve. Some shurran tarits reamin however, like the discomfort that stems from being ruled over.

Public Agenda

House Morwen, above all, wants sovereignty. To rule themselves, in peace. They don't attack unless attacked first.

History

Not long after Nahator Missar sent his first ambassadors up north to find allies, news began to spread about people successfully crossing the Deadland. Intrigued by tales of wild, unclaimed lands many attempted the crossing and many failed. Among those who managed to get to Hallia was a shurran chieftain and his gardeners. After arrival, they approached the king directly, who saw the usefulness of having a shurran chieftain under his command.   House Morwen was founded on the principle of starting over and abandoning the bloody past that all shurrans share. The chieftan Margohk utilised instead the expertise of his people. There were three gardeners under his command. These biologist-engineers of Shurrah were the best when it came to terraforming, so turning an already fertile land into an agricultural power was not even a challenge to them. Soon the lands of House Morwen became the breadbasket of newfound Hallia. Through trade with the other settlers House Morwen amassed a wealth that was unseen in the south before. As a direct result, they became an organization that was almost equal to House Missar in power, the first of Hallian high nobility.   As time went on, more and more people settled in the south, some of whom later reached the rank of high nobility. However, many of the lesser nobles kept warring between themselves making hallia stagnant, its lands bloodsoaked. While House Morwen had few lesser nobles living on their lands, they were largely unbothered by this infighting. Other great houses, however, were downright furious about it. And since House Missar did little to stop the infighting, Great House Riak  took matters into their own hands. They waged a bloody campaign through Hallia pacifying these lesser nobles.   House Missar opposed them and initially House Morwen supported the king, but soon it was clear that a stalemate was inevitable. Seeing the opportunity, Morwen sided with the rebels to overthrow the current king in exchange for their soverignty. And after the war was over and Martin Riak was crowned king, House Morwen claimed their land from Hallia and founded Morwen, the second southern kingdom.   House Morwen could finally build the kingdom they always wanted to. They built themselves into an agricultural superpower and began trading with Hallia, now a bloodsoaked kingdom with rampant famine. Morwen also invested heavily into shipbuilding and in time they were the first to be able to sail around the Deadland. This gave them the opportunity to trade with the northern kingdoms, especially farumen colonies. As Hallia was struggling with its own infighting, Morwen was on the rise for a golden age.

Territories

House Morwen held the largest land by far in old Hallia. These lands were fertile and Morwen made the most of it. Several metal deposits were also found there and ming prospered around these deposits. Quarries and forests are also abundant. All in all, Huse Morwen was easily self sufficient and had a lot of resources left for export.

Foreign Relations

House Morwen's wealth came primarily from trading, especially agricultural products. Thus they are required to keep good relations with all of their neighbours, which took more and more effort as a civil war became inevitable. Morwen succeeded in breaking away from Hallia during the fighting, which first made them betrayers in the eyes of all Hallians, but as famine ravaged the kingdom, they became desperate for help. Morwen provided that help in the form of cheap food supplies and suddenly all hallians forgot their animosity against Morwen.   Once their ships were able to sail around the Deadland, Morwen established connections with the powers to the north. From these trade routes they gained further wealth.

Honor, Duty And Valor

The colours in Morwen's crest represent the true farumen blood of the founder(black), the wheat they produce and the wealth they gained with it(yellow/gold) and the fertile land of Hallia, later Morwen(green). Why they were arranged in this way is anyone's guess.
