Wallacian Campaign Session #43
General Summary
- Initially Crow had the silver cigar-case, but he later traded it to Mary. Between the two of them, they discovered that it was longer than the cigars it held, and they found a false bottom to the case.
- In the false bottom they found a note and map indicating where and when "Black Bart" Haskill was to next rendezvous with the smugglers. The date was about three weeks in the future, indicating that Bart had lied when he had told them the meeting was in a week.
- Dame Wilkendal witnessed and notarized grandmother Dendrar signing the apothecary business over to Mirna Dendrar.
- Mirna then asked the party if she could travel with them to Westport and help her take possession of the shop from her brother Marcus Dendrar. She said that she could not promise a specific reward for this service, as she did not know what state her brother would be leaving the business in, but said that she would repay them as best she could. The party agreed to those terms.
- Mirna recognized Leanna as a wizard, and offered her a scroll of the Message cantrip as a down payment of the full reward. Leanna accepted the scroll.
- Crow's unsettling dream has evolved, but he has chosen to not talk to anyone about this dream.
- Leaving Wilken's Mill, Mary led the party north cross-country, hoping to avoid any possible Haskill clan ambushes along the road. Apparently the party did not trust Black Bart's assurances that his clan was fleeing the kingdom.
- Retracing the path of their previous cross-country trek, Mary led the party through the woods bordering the Bone Hills. Once again, the party was attacked by a pack of wolves during the night. (Where are all these wolves coming from?)
- Initially the wolves attacked the horses and unarmed people in the camp, but once the party members proved to be dangerous, the wolves redirected their attacks against them.
- At one point during the fight, Crow threw the manacled Black Bart at one of the wolves, hoping to drive the beast away. Black Bart was not pleased with his involvement in the fight, but his gag prevent him from voicing his objection.
- After killing most of the wolves and driving off a few survivors, the party was able to salvage 4 intact wolf skins, but no teeth.
- Arriving at Westport with no further incidents, the party passed through the south gate and went directly to the palace.
- Carefully swapping out the party's manacles for those provided by the guards, the party turned in Black Bart for the 600 gold piece reward. Constable Clarkson briskly thanked the patty for their assistance, then hurried into the depths of the palace to reclaim his lost position.
- Mirna turned in her notarized documents at the palace, then asked the party to accompany her to the Mortar & Pestle apothecary shop.
- Arriving at the shop, they discovered that it was empty of all inventory and coins. Only some raw materials and the alchemical preparation equipment remained.
- Mary sought out a local street urchin for information, and he directed her to the nearby green-grocer Annie (the local gossip hub). From them Mary learned that Marcus had hastily loaded a handcart and headed east towards Old Town only a few days ago.
- Crow and Leanna checked in with local leaders of their faith, Crow meeting Prior Baelgun, cleric of Tyr, while Leanna met with Priestess Judica, a cleric of Mystra. Crow and Leanna relayed their recent adventures defeating members of the Haskill clan. Baelgun and Judica both relayed stories of our the kingdom sent soldiers and mages to subdue the previous Haskill stronghold in the northwest corner of Westland. Judica in particular stressed that the mageborn threat was considered serious enough that Countess Thorrindal was part of the forces sent to drive out the Haskills.
- Mary then moved her investigation to the docks of Old Town. The contact her parents had introduced her to, Salty Pete, was still missing. Most of the locals assumed he got drunk one drink and drowned in the bay. Checking with the dock-master was more productive: He recalled that a man who looked like Marcus had boarded a sea-going ship, but he could not recall which ship, nor exactly which day it was.
- Checking at a local pawn shop named Bede's Baubles that deals in "pre-owned and misplaced items", Mary learned that most believe that the remaining few Haskills fled town on a ship bound for Valara. Also, at the pawn shop, Mary spotted a magical folding boat for sale with a price of 500 gold pieces, but she decided not to buy it.
- The party has heard several times that the previous south-Westland commander, Captain William Sullis, had some success breaking up smuggling gangs before he and his company were recalled to the capital. They have decided to meet with him before heading back out in search of the smugglers who may know the whereabouts of Mary's parents.
- The next session will open in Westport.
The next DC20 session will be held on 09-Nov-2025.
The player characters will be level 3 for this session.
