Summer Camp '24

Welcome to Summer Camp '24

Summer Camp is an annual event run by the wonderful staff here at World Anvil and supported by members of the community. Each week during July, a set of prompts will be released which are based on a specific theme. This article will act as my central hub for the event and the month prior of prep for the event iteself.   I've learned so much being around the WA community the past year particularly so I'm hoping to put all of this into practice this year and smash my way to my first diamond badge in these three years. Even better, if these is something that doesn't quite match the world of Nonvyorx, I will push myself over the world of Emore to explore the dark and creepy phenomena and world over that way.

Homework Prep!

Week One

Assignment 1

Consider what kind of changes would fit in with your world's themes, genre, and other foundational points.

This assignment, which i'm expecting will have a similar counterpart in all weeks, is going to be handled by the theme prep section below, this is going to dicuss how change can be looked at in Nonvyrox particularly, as well as more generic themes of change.

Assignment 2

Based on this, decide how many prompts you'll go for during Summer Camp. Then, download the pledge document and fill it accordingly!

Here is my pledge for Summer Camp!

However, this is not the full story. I am aiming for a small number of 40 prompts this year. This is a minimum number of what i would like to achieve over the course of Summer Camp, if not pushing further to allow for me to create more new and interesting things.

Assignment 3

Get your categories and tags organized!

Categories
My categories have recently been updated after a long time of being static. However, there are some considerations I want to make when looking at the different categories and articles when saving articles.   For my locations, I want to include landmarks and buildings as articles under the main settlement article. However, the issue arises when it comes to people. For people linked to specific locations, I want to categorise them undreneath the article mention. For more generic and full characters they will be pushed into the Characters category, which will develop them further.   The main exception will be organisations, most of these will have the people who fall under their perview. My main organisations article has been moved under Nonvyrox developing further my category system and hierarchy. I've also been looking to reduce the number of "primary" organisations in my world, which has meant that I have had to reorganise that collection.

Tags
I want to set up a collection of tags to implement more technical elements into my articles written in Summer Camp and keep things organised for later work. Some example implemented tags are listed below.
SC2024

This will be the primary tag that will show me that the article is from Summer Camp
[Type]

This will be a tag just to organise each article by its exact article type.
WIP

This will be a tag to focus on articles that are in progress and may need work post Summer Camp.   This will also add a small box on the article which indicates that the article is WIP
[Theme]

This will be a tag to emphasise the Summer Camp prompt theme.
[Continent]

This will be a tag to organise by continent. Additionally, this may alter some theming later down the line.
Stub

This will be a tag to focus on articles that I would consider a stub in need of expansion later.   This will also add a small box on the article which indicates that the article is a Stub.

Assignment 4

Take a look at your meta, primer, and any other high-level document and update it according to the current state of your world.

Introduction to Nonvyrox

My current project during Summer Camp Prep is putting together the article I call "Introduction to Nonvyrox". This article is supposed to be one of the biggest high-level documents for the world as it gives people a great idea of what to expect within the world in terms of inspiration, theme, and other main concepts.   The goal is to implement the most recent variations of the world into this document and focus on the differences that I have developed and understood about the world, especially as it has grown recently.

Week Two

Assignment 1

Consider what kinds of refuge would fit in with your world's themes, genre, and other foundational points.

This assignment once again is going to be handled by the theme prep section below, this is going to dicuss how the idea of Refuge can be looked at in Nonvyrox particularly, as well as more generic themes of Refuge that I can look at.

Assignment 2

Find a community—whether that’s our Discord server, Facebook Group, your RPG or friend group, or something else.

There are a lot of communities that I have been a part of during this part year and I wanted to choose the people who I can rely on to be my accountability buddies for Summer Camp.
World Anvil Friends

There are some members of the World Anvil community that have been great members of not only the community, but have become friends. These people I hope to work together to be accountability buddies for the course of Summer Camp.   Check out the great work by each of these people:
  • Mochi
  • Catoblepon
  • Kirsty (K. P. Kilbride)
  •
    My RPG Group

While not directly related to my writing over the course Summer Camp. There are a number of elements of my worldbuilding within Nonvyrox that are directly linked to our ongoing campaign. As a result, the existence of our ongoing campaign is a big motivation and inspiration source for the worldbuilding that I complete in the world of Nonvyrox. Over Summer Camp, I want to use the campaign and upcoming elements as part of my inspiration for the worldbuilding I complete.

    The Cookie Cottage

The chapter of the Cookie Cottage has always been a great source of accountability throughout the past year. I want to be a guiding member of the accountability check-ins over the course of Summer Camp. Each member will discuss how many articles they want to complete and how far they've gotten on a weekly basis.   In leading these check-ins, I hope that each member of the chapter is able to find themselves achieving as much as they can over the course of Summer Camp.

    Assignment 3

Find ways to improve styling and layout in your world!

Very recently I've been focusing on the styling and layout of Nonvyrox. I have always used a fairly consistent Wiki styling similar to other websites. Recently I've been looking for ways to make my world more accessible and overall more readable.   Even for this article, I've created new containers to segment different elements of writing from others. As a result, I want to make sure that I have a better layout plan for different types of articles that will ensure that each article is easy to read and understand.

    Assignment 4

If you’re a CSS wizard, maybe take the time now to give it a polish!

So, I would never call myself a CSS Wizard when in comparison to many of the other members of the community. However, I can work my way around CSS fairly well!
Before Summer Camp, I want to look at different ways I can set up new pieces of information to only appear if the article contains certain tags. Even more so I want to look for cool pieces of interaction that can make elements of my new articles stand out if needed.

    Week Three

    Assignment 1

Consider what kind of beliefs would fit in with your world's themes, genre, and other foundational points.

This assignment will again be handled by the theme prep section below, this is going to dicuss how the idea of belief can be looked at in Nonvyrox particularly, as well as more generic themes of belief that I can look at.

    Assignment 2

Create a bank of inspirations! Quotes, music, description of experiences and shower thoughts, etc.

There are hundreds of inspirational quotes and pieces of music that I've gathered over the course of developing Nonvyrox. However, I have been collating a small colleciton of important elements in a unique collection. Some important things that are being collected are listed below and how they will be tracked.
    Inspirational Quotes

I've worked to gather a collection of Inspirational Quotes and place them in key places around my working space. The goal of this is to keep me motivated as much as possible whilst also reminding myself of the basic inspirations of the world of Nonvyrox.
Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.
    - Arthur C. Clarke

A dream doesn't become reality through magic. It takes sweat, determination, and hard work.
    - Kevin-Prince Boateng
We are always more afraid than we wish to be, but we can always be braver than we expect.
    - Robert Jordan

Religion. It's given people hope in a world torn apart by religion.
    - Jon Stewart

    Music

My music tastes often change between the times that I'm able to write. As a result, I often need to have a vast selection of music avaliable at all times. To help with this for Summer Camp and beyond, I want to create three types of playlist that I'm creating this week, each providing different understanding and atmospheres when writing.
    Continent

As I started to outline in my introduction article, my different continents have different atmospheres and genres. As a result, I want to compile a playlist of music for each of the continents comprising of orchestral, atmospheric, and popular music. The aim is to put me in the mindset of the continent as I start to write within it, and continue to keep the inspiration flowing as I finish the article.
    Streaming

The last type of playlist I want to make is a "stream-safe" playlist. This will be a set of music that is related directly to the idea of a streaming. During Summer Camp my goal is to get some streaming done surrounding my worldbuilding.
    Genre/Vibe

While I sometimes dislike the word "Vibe" when discussing Nonvyrox, I feel like the general idea of an atmosphere and genre will allow for a vast variety of work to be completed outside of specific locations.   The Genre of the world is extremely diverse in nature so there are several playlists I can develop based on the genre. Additionally, each of these can be seperated into different styles within these genres. Elements such as action scenes, deities, or sweeping shots can help setup different atmospheres for the writing at that time.

    Shower Thoughts/Random Ideas

I have been keeping a track of any random ideas leading up to Summer Camp in a small notebook. I've been keeping the notebook since WorldEmber and have used it as the basis for small little prompts and ideas to keep further for fleshing out in the world.   This notebook will be an intense source of inspiration for the course of Summer Camp and will also give a better basis for the content that I want to look at over the course of the event and further pieces of worldbuilding that I want to create.

    Assignment 3

Find art and pictures that inspire you, and grab a map if you don't have one (and need one).

This week I've begin putting together some inspirational images using online sources to get a greater understanding of the aesthetics and feelings of the world of Nonvyrox. I particularly have been focusing on three different types of image: people, places, and deities. For each of these topics I want to gather together some ideas of how the aesthetics of each of these combine together to produce a consistent styling across different locations.   For example, with the Obsidian Forge, they are often dedicated to the goddess Thoura, so in creating an inspiration board of this organisation, I'm getting a better understanding of the aesthetic styling of the group and some of the other followers of Thoura.

    Assignment 4

Check your inspirations again. Are they still relevant? Can you find any that better represent the current state of your project?

There are plenty of inspirations for Nonvyrox ranging from traditional fantasy novels through to new and diverse worlds and stories being told right now. This section will list some of the most prominent inspirations that I want to continue to look at over Summer Camp to inspire me more.
    Novels, Film and TV

    • Lord of the Rings by J.R.R Tolkein
    • The Legend of Vox Machina (and other content) by Critical Role
    • Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan
    • Earthsea by Ursula K Le Guin
    • The Sandman by Neil Gaiman
    • Labyrinth by Jim Henson
    • The Neverending Story by Wolfgang Petersen
    • The Princess Bride by Rob Reiner

    Week Four

    Assignment 1

Consider what kind of decay would fit in with your world's themes, genre, and other foundational points.

This assignment will again be handled by the theme prep section below, this is going to dicuss how the idea of decay can be looked at in Nonvyrox particularly, as well as more generic themes of decay that I can look at.

    Assignment 2

If you like special tea when you write, stock up for a month. Tidy your office, make a “do not disturb” sign, and think about any other last-minute strategies to optimize your writing space and time!

There are a few things that help keep me focused during writing, and avoid being distracted. My writing space needs cleaned and organised, usually this helps focus me on my writing and avoiding the big distraction around me.   Additionally, I find that scheduling my time for the course of Summer Camp can be difficult. As a result, I'm going to try and spend some time putting together a schedule that will allow me to ensure that I have the time to spend on the prompts that I would like. Additionally, this will ensure that I keep up with the work I need to complete during the month.

    Assignment 3

Review your world homepage to hook potential readers!

My homepage has been a constant source of alteration through the past month or two. I've been trying to consider some of the changes I want to make that will give a better flow for users. Currently, I plan to add a few call to actions that new and existing users can use the homepage as a hub towards the rest of my content. The main call for action will be an introduction article for Nonvyrox which will act as a funnel for new users and a signpost for returning users.   The next call to action that I think is very important for me to add is a better sign post towards content that has already been made, particularly when wanting to divide my followers into the two main categories: RPG Players and Story Readers. As a part of this I want to put together three button that will guide users to RPG content, Story elements or exploring the world. These buttons will give users a better way to find new and existing content.   Additionally, I want to tidy up some of my CSS so that the homepage represents the themes of Nonvyrox and feels appealing to all the various users who come across my world. As part of this, I will need to ensure a consistency with CSS colours by setting up variables and then ensuring that my theming continues throughout the homepage as well as the rest of the world.

    Assignment 4

Take a look at your author profile and pillar articles on your world and polish them!

There are two main things that I have been looking at in this assignment:
    Author Profile

My author profile has not been complete for a long time and really should have before now!
My goal this week is to ensure that I fill in more details about myself and ensure that I am presenting the best part about myself in the course of my profile.

    Introduction Article

I have been making big swings at the article mentioned near the beginning of this month with the Introduction to Nonvyrox. There has been significant steps towards its development but I have realised that it is a super long article in its design. As a result, this week I am focusing on shortening and developing the contents of the article so that the whole article isn't overwhelming for any new users.   I also want to ensure that I divide my world by its genres and themes/issues. Currently the main issue is that some have strong leanings towards one atmosphere in a specific location, but the rest leans towards a generic fantasy vibe. As a result, I want warning in the continent categories while providing a short summary of the history and current events of the continent and how it should feel to play or read a story in this part of the world.

    Theme Preparation

    THEME: Change

Change is a powerful and unique thing in many senses. People experience a change throughout their lives, society change from moment to moment, and we have seen the powerful experience that history and change can have on a single life.   Nonvyrox is a world that is steeped in the idea of change. The most recent global event was truly The Shatter which has changed so much of the world. Removing technological and arcane developments that once stood at the pinnacle of the world as well as removing the physical capabilities of the divine from the material plane and trapping them in their divine domains. The change invoked by the shatter is embedded into the world's modern goals.   However, there are many other types of change that need to be focused on, particularly in the different continents of the world. Ossalimar is currently going through a national war hidden by both leaders from their populations. Kyradon is gathering together new political groups after the collapse of an ancient empire during The Shatter and most of the continent being covered in strange arcane desserts. These are only two examples of the drastic change that has started in the world that I want to look at during this part of Summer Camp.   I also want to consider the majority of different elements of Change within the world of Nonvyrox by not limiting it based on wide-spread change, but by looking at personal change and how someone has been affected by their own capabilities. Additionally, I want to look at how things have changed over time. The Shatter may have been the biggest event, but I want to focus on the national and local changes that have occured over. This will look towards a more fleshed out timeline for the different points of the world.

    THEME: Refuge

A place to be sheltered and turn to feel safe is always a precarious thing to build, let alone in a world filled with strife and war as Nonvyrox currently is.   There are many places that claim to be a refuge for a vast number of creatures. However, some of them come with a cost or religious purpose that can either go against the beliefs of those who seeking refuge. Additionally, there are locations that are more selective over whom they accept to give refuge. In this regard, I want to explore some of these locations and people to explore alternatives to safe refuge. There are some organisations who are a refuge for different people based on their needs, desires, and goals. These organisations can range from global to local, each of them providing more purpose for those who require it.   Outside of new and alternative views on refuge, there are places that are sanctuaries in places of war and destruction. Many regions across the world have something that is safe for someone, regardless of their beliefs or political affiliations. These are also locations that I want to expand upon further within this theme as these become places of restbite for the many adventurers and people of the world.

    THEME: Belief

As stated in the prep brief, there are many different versions of belief, this is true in Nonvyrox as well. The world has a primary pantheon in The Shattered Pantheon, however there are more than fifty planned deities and spiritual figures for the world. This is a focus on purely religious belief, yet it expands beyond into testements of how you some should live and the differetn ways in which this alters personal beliefs of an individual.   One thing that has started to come up over the past few months of reflection on Nonvyrox is that belief is a strong power. There are beings who are given an almost deific status throughout the amassing of belief in their capabilities. Known as the , this group of characters are an interesting dive into how belief can be transformed in the world of Nonvyrox.   I also want to look at character's and their motivations, which is another form of belief. The inspirations of heroes, villains, and the average person in the world will have a unique and interesting skew on the idea of belief. Looking towards characters, locations and other elements of the world that can be influenced by the idea of belief, temples and religous beings. However, just like the Starfeather Circle, I want to look for pieces of worldbuilding where the idea of belief can strengthen the bonds or abilities of an individual or collection of individuals.

    THEME: Decay

Without adventure civilization is in full decay.
    — Alfred North Whitehead
This is the first of these preparations to start with a quote, which is unique for a particular reason. When working on Week 3's quotes, this particular one came up when I was thinking about certain parts of the world that are in a state of decay. However, it is also an idea of decay in memory. This world is the result of a mass conflict that decayed old civilization, primarily due to the hubris of mortals against the gods.   The current world almost feels like a representation of generation loss, the idea that a subsequent copy of an analogue medium will lose some of its quality. I like the idea that Nonvyrox is a degraded version of what it was before. Some people looking to halt the decay of the previous civilization and restore their own versions of that world that fell to the power of the gods. However, at the same time there are those looking to speedup this decay and ensure that this world is one that has learned from its mistakes and can move forwards with a new idea that is unlike anything that came before.   I should also mention that decay is a big topic and that there are several different ways that it can be looked at in Nonvyrox. There are some creatures who impose decay when they walk, but there are as equally wastelands that are decayed from The Shatter and have not been able to return to their previous state. All of these elements can be expanded on as unique and different ways of more common depictions of decay being present in the world. However, I will look to subvert expectations from these usual depictions or find a new way of incorporating them into the design of the world.
