Quarterion's Armory
A New Challenge Approacheth
I've always seen Swordtember and been tempted to take part, but due to its more artistic nature, I've always felt a little discouraged from taking part. That is, until now! Polina "Line" Arteev has sent out the challenge to people to take part in this challenge among the different chapters of World Anvil, and I am here to take up the call!
While I cannot guarantee that I shall complete a sword for each day in September (especially as I am starting so late in the month!) I shall endeavor to complete the list by the start of October! If however, I shall not succeed at that, I will be aiming to get all swords completed by the 22nd October, the date that I turn a quarter century old!
I shall be following along with Faith Schaffer's list as provided by Polina "Line" Arteev, however, I may dip my toe into some of the other lists that have been going around the internet. If I complete any they shall be in a section beyond the original list. I want to also eventually come back and draw all of the swords in the armory over the course of the challenge, but we shall see how successful that endeavor shall be!
I have been across the great lands and seas of Nonvyrox. I have even scoured the heights and depths of the various planes of existence to find materials worthy of being forged and crafted into blades and weapons of various kinds. Some of them have found great success over my many lifetimes, while others are still sitting in my vault, awaiting use by the correct owner.
Day One - Shell
Crafted after a chance encounter with some strange creatures of the ocean, the Warden's Bane seems to resemble the curved blade of a cutlass. Yet on closer inspection it seems to move constantly, straightening and bending all over again. It's curve seems to shift with the tides, slowly and gradually straightening before curving again. The hilt of the blade is course and rough, especially as its prone to being consumed by barnacles, all wanting to feed on the power of the blade.
When wielded, the blade seems to create a small breeze like the ocean spraying onto a boat. It seems to possess some form of magic, granting its wielder the ability to swim deftly under the seas. On the pommel of the blade is a small conch shell that Quarterion seemed to claim from a beast known as a Sea Warden. When someone whispers the name of a person into the shell, they find themselves able to send a short message to the person that arrives as if a whisper of the sea.
The conch shell seemed so small and quaint, yet I could hear within it the rush of waves larger than even the ship could handle. I quickly pocketed it away and considered how I could harness such violent tendencies into power of my making. A blade that would shift as the tides.
Day Two - Moss
During a trip to the , Quaterion discovered a strange moss that was as hard as steel, yet remained soft when you gently touched it. They gathered some of the strange moss with hopes to forge it into a blade, to some success. The Softstrike Blade is a longsword that on first glance appears to be a collection of moss atop the hilt of another sword. However, upon speaking a command word, the whole blade is covered in the moss as it seems to thrum with planar energy.
When wielding the Softstrike Blade, someone is able to cushion their landing when falling from a great height. Additionally, the blade seems to possess some magical potential that allows it to conjure plants and other vegetation. The Softstrike Blade is also sharper when it strikes than most other blades, especially when the moss covers the whole blade.
It works! The moss has seemingly fused with the steel of the blade, creating a hardened alloy. Yet it seems to contract, I wonder if there's magic that will allow it to expand! There is more to discover about this strange and wonderful material.
Day Three - Automation
When travelling into the mechanical plane of Thurtenis, Quarterion came across a significant number of almost mechanical beings that somehow still worked despite gears seemingly rusted over for several centuries. Their nature inspired the bladesmith to consider the possibility of learning some of how the constructs worked and implementing this into a powerful blade. After spending some weeks with the creatures, Quaterion was shown how their power core works and provides them with unnatural energy that keeps them going regardless of their condition. As a thanks for his work, the constructs gave them a smaller power core to put into a blade of their design.
The Arcanus Soulblade was forged using this power core, creating a large split blade that hums with the same energy as the constructs did. When swung, it seems to pulse an arcane force into a target that's been hit. Additionally, the blade seems to speak to its wielder, allowing them to guide the target to hit more often than other weapons. Once per day, the wielder can commune with the blade to launch a blast of energy through the middle of the split blade at a target focused into a beam.
The hum of energy was powerful, almost overwhelming, like a melody ringing in my ears. Then it formed sounds that were familiar "he~ hello". I was in shock in that moment, taken aback by the sheer sentience of the blade I had just forged. With each word, the power core seemed to thrum with a white light and powerful energy.
Day Four - Scale
The Fang Whistle is a swift shortsword forged for a great copper-haired bard that visited Quarterion with a unique request. They were given a strange of a dragon's hair with the request to forge it into a violin bow. One side of the bow was to be made of metal and work as a shortsword, whilst the other side works as a violin bow for the bard's primary instrument. After the creation of the bow, the bard was so impressed they revealed their true form, a Copper scaled dragon filled with revelry and joy. They gifted the bow to Quarterion with the hope that they would be able to gift it to a musician in need of support.
When wielded by a musician, the Fang Whistle can be wielded at the same time as a Violin. When used to play music it creates a line of powerful thunder and acid that bursts from the end of the violin. This acid damage continues when Fang Whistle is used as a sword, embedding deep within the target. Engraved deep in the hilt of the blade seems to be a symbol of revelry that emanated a level of divine energy.
In the lands of the empires, and homes of the vales,
A fearsome monster, with copper lined scales.
He searched through the valley, for a moment of peace,
But in the sheer darkness, no rest for the beast.
Day Five - Bell
Found deep into the Slycol Desert, a small silver bell was used to help forge the Night's Whisper. Upon the discovery of the different runes that lined the parts of the bell, Quarterion was inspired by the fact that it did not make a noise. This changed when he translated the runes and discovered a command word, toyatymo which means a strong movement. The noise of the bell threw Quarterion across the room, a force and power that rang in his ears for a few minutes.
The Night's Whisper resembles a smaller khoptesh, with a straight section of the blade and another curved section that seems to come to a point ahead of the blade. The dagger seems to be made of a single piece of silver metal, with black leather wrapped around its hilt. dangling off the pommel of the chain is the silver bell, its aura of silence emanating over the whole blade.
When Night's Whisper is being wielded, the wielder makes no noises, their entire form seemingly silenced by the dagger. This allows them to more easily surprise even the most prepared foes. Additionally, if they are overwhelmed, the dagger can quickly burst a the forceful energy to get targets away from the wielder, causing those who are knocked back by the blade to be deafened for a short time.
The sands of the Slycol can be devastating for even the most experienced of adventurer, I was travelling thanks to the benefit of a Skulker Band that were charged by the Alliance to come to my aid. It was in the ruins of some ancient city that a small ball of silver caught my eye. As of yet, I know not what the arcane inscriptions say, but I shall discover in time the importance of their meaning and what it can do, for such a beautiful component would be more than exquisite in my collection.
Day Six - Fossil
Forged from the bone of an ancient creature, the Bone Saw is a shortsword that has been chipped over time. On one side, it is a forged beauty, lined by a clear and sharp edge. The other side, however, is jagged and seemingly made of the teeth of the ancient creature, creating an almost saw-like serration through its edges. Built into the cross guard of the sword is a strange ember-like gemstone that seems to flare and glow, holding the blade together with a flare of magic.
Quarterion found the bone as part of a fossil buried deep among the Undergroves of Heimter. Within such strange places, he found large skeletons were hidden, likely covered as they fell during or before The Shatter. Their forms were reminiscent of ancient giants or dragons, but the physiology seems to be moer mundane than magical. Whatever the creatures were, they seem to be long dead.
While wielding the Bone Saw, the user is resistant to any flames and heat that could incur injury. Additionally, it seems to cause a more severe blow to creatures with flesh, pulling it as if it were a meal towards the centre of the blade. This seems to translate to the vitality of the wielder, as they seem bolstered when such additional damage is incurred.
The Undergroves of this continent seem to be filled with not only marvelous living wonders, but long forgotten ones too! The combination of strange monstrosities and unique physiologies has lead to the foundation of modern archaeology as it stands. It is without a doubt that these skeletons could be found in time and studied to learn of the path creatures took to get to their current state. Let alone the power that these skeletal figures possess.
Day Seven - Clock
Built from the hands of a haunted clock, the blade named Seconds is said to be a swift and quick dagger that can lash at many foes. While the origins of the clock itself are shrouded in mystery, Quarterion has always been clear about how they got their hands on it. In the dust filled morning of a day in Ankh'eal, the markets were open and thriving with business. A seller found Quarterion and handed him the pieces of this clock, claiming that nothing but bad luck would follow the creation.
While the anecdote has been shared many times, the blade itself seems to resemble the hands of a clock, with a flared tip that seems to resemble a heart in some manner. The dagger itself seems to sheen with a purple and green aura that shrouds its entire form. The hilt is made of several cogs from the clock melted together to form a smooth metallic handle, that rings with a haunting chime.
Seconds seems to cause an unnatural speed in the wielder, allowing them to swiftly move through areas and cut down foes. It seems to double the speed of someone using the blade for a short time, about 10 minutes or so, before the blade needs to recharge. During this time, the blade deals deep gashes that seem to ooze with a necrotic energy. However, it is said that the blade is cursed, providing those who wield it with a strange voice following them.
I can't sleep with that incessant chattering coming from the dagger. Maybe the seller was right, the clock was cursed and I've just found a way to unbind the heathen from its cage. I want to destroy it, scatter it to pieces and let it rot in some dank dungeon. But I'm afraid that if I do that, I'll only be sealing my fate.
Day Eight - Canine
Canines are a set of daggers that are made of a deep ivory, formed from a bone gifted by a large Hell Hound of the . They seem to be flickering with an aura of fire and have inscriptions depicting the hound on their pommel. They curve almost like the sharpened fangs of such a large hound. The hilt of the blades is made of a dark black metal that seems to hum with an aura of screams and dark souls that almost howl at night time.
While wielding the weapon, a simple command word can activate an aura of flames that lick and burn anyone stabbed with the weapon. Additionally, the wielder feels themselves benefitting from possessing both daggers, attacking with the ferocity and strategy of a powerful wolf.
Unlike many of Quarterion's weapons, the two blades were given away, being used by a poewrful Lycanthrope known as Martoon. They wielded the weapons as part of their arsenal and found a way to infuse them with their potential for blood magic, infusing them with a legacy that is built within the symbol engraved into the base of the pommel that signifies ancient blood magic and its usage.
The Canines are to be given to Martoon for the sum of 1500 platinum pieces. They have requested that I attempt to infused the blades with a fragment of ancient magic that will benefit their usage later on. Should the blades ever return to me, they should be enchanted even further...
Day Nine - Feline
Whiskers is a rapier created from the essence of a powerful celestial cat from Aesillum. It is said that Quarterion summoned the creature using a spell, discussing existence and what they remember from their previous lives. The kindness shown by Quarterion pleased the Animal Lord and they granted the element of their essence to Quarterion, giving them the equivalent of a long thing metal blade. After many months debating how to use it, Quarterion took the essence and forged a hilt that resembles the Animal Lord's face.
When wielded, Whiskers allows the wielder to double their pace for a short time, allowing them to move as quickly as a cat. Additionally, while attuned to the weapon's essence, the wielder can be understood by animals and sneak around with additional stealth.
The Animal itself changed from the form a cat, to humanoid, passing me over its essence, like a string being drawn out of their chest. In almost an instant, the essence formed a string that solidified into a piece of thin metal, just about big enough to be used as a rapier blade. I know that in time, this will make a fine blade.
Day Ten - Rodent
Plaguebearer is a double-sided dagger, with each of the two blades forming an S-shaped curve. The blade itself seems to be filled with veins of strange bright green acid that glows in the dark. At the crossguard of each of the blades is a skull of a rat that is positioned so that it looks like the blade is being produced from their mouth.
The metal that formed the blade has been labelled as Venom Steel due to its strange properties of being filled with a strange acidic substance that lines it as if they were veins filling the blades. Quarterion claims that they gathered their entire stock of Venom Steel from the base of deep sewer in QIl'Sora City. Inside this den of acid and venom was a large rat the size of a small horse. Quarterion claims they escaped with few scratches, but could see the remains of other adventurers who attempted to defeat the creature.
When wielded, Plaguebearer seems to thrum with a arcane energy, this seems to translate to a splash of venom that spouts from the Venom Steel onto the target of an attack. Plaguebearer seems to attatch to its wielder finding itself returning to the wielder if they use it as a thrown weapon, linking them by a chain.
Venom Steel seems to retain its strange properties when forged. In fact, they seem to be filled with more arcane potential for enchantment. I don't quite have enough to forge a shortsword, but a set of daggers seems too simple for this metal. I want to look at using an old sketch for a dual-sided dagger from the ancient times.
Day Eleven - Reliquary
While Quarterion considers the Orderbore to be one of the finest greatswords they ever forged, they are most impressed by the sheath of the blade. Desgined upon request by a paladin devout to the tenet of The Bastion of Law, the sheath was the product of spending hours intricately forging the leather and enchanting it to look like a gold and marble reliquary. They were even impressed that they made the sheath open no matter where it was held on the body, allowing for simple release even if it was worn on the back of the paladin.
The blade itself sheens with a powerful silver, and is intricately carved to show designs and symbols related to The Bastion of Law. When a command word was spoken, the designs would light up and shine a bright divine light. If a target was hit while the blade was luminated, it would be burned with divine radiance that seared its flesh and imprinted the designs as a brand.
However, Orderbore is one of Quarterion's greatest sorrows. The paladin and blade were not seen again after they entered the northen wastes towards the Tokevis Region. As a result, both were lost and have yet to be recovered, though every now and again, Quarterion sends several missions north to discover the fate of the long lost work of art.
I want to return Orderbore to my collection purely out of pride, but I am sure that it is out there somewhere. Deep in a dark dungeon guarded by a powerful creature, just pining to return to me. Or, it has been destroyed or passed onto new hands. All I can hope is that it will return to me someday, before it is melted down and turned to scrap.
Day Twelve - Concealed
Quarterion can often be a serious person, delivering lectures, and writing textbooks on adventuring for the next generations. However, they will confirm that they themselves have a mischevious side that they let loose every now and again. The Hidden Blade is one such instance. It resembles the hilt of a longsword, designed intricately with a lion's head at the pommel. Some would say it is the finest blade in the realm.
If it had a visible blade...
The entire blade of the Hidden Blade is covered in a specialized ink. Combining the venom sack of a Basalisk with water sourced from the Aquatic Foci creates a powerful ink that seems to form itself based on its surroundings, creating an almost perfect invisibility. This means that strikes made with the blade seem to have a sharper strike as they can strike more stealthily. Additionally the combination of the venom and water seems to have formed some acidic and frozen magic to embed itself into the metal.
I wanted to find materials that would form a cloak of invisibility better than that scam of invisibility that is being sold in many magic shops across the different nations, as a result, I sourced basalisk venom and used some strange cold water from the Aquatic Foci. The combination has led to a strange blade that I both find hilarious but raises my concern for how effective such a blade could be in combat.
Day Thirteen - Bloom
Thornbroker is a beautiful rapier formed of a large metallic flower stem that produces throrns along its thin edge. It seem designed for a noble, especially one of the Seelie Court withi the . Quarterion forged it from a metal gifted as part of an exchange with an archfae. The metal seems to be organic, almost like the stem of a flower, growing thorns along its edges slowly over time. When forged for the blade, it seems that the entire hilt was formed into a boquet of multi-coloured flowers all growing from the tang of the weapon.
Thornbroker is designed to be used by a member of a Fae Court to both convince people of their plight and keep up appearances. When one has spent time with the weapon, they gain the ability to put emphasis on their persuasive words to attempt to charm people around them. The blade seems to thrum with the magical energy of the Fae allowing the wielder to both disguise their form and cause a surge of chaotic magic to burst at a creature they target with the weapon.
I had a dream, or maybe it wasn't quite a dream, where I met this beautiful elven lord. He was on a throne of flowers and thorns. I vaguely remember him talking about creating a sword, his hands guiding my creation. Then he handed me a strange rod of metal, enough to make a rapier from. Then I woke finding that strange rod in my hands and the idea emblazoned into my mind. I believe a creature of the Fae has their eyes upon me...
Day Fourteen - Rot
Blade's Rot is a powerful longsword that was originally forged as a finely crafted decorative piece for Quarterion's collection. It was forged from a briliant silver and stell composite that allowed for both strength and beauty combined. However, after Quarterion took the blade as a helpful piece to the Demonic Realms, they discovered over the course of the next month that the blade seemed to rot, with seeping wounds in the blade itself. Over the many years since this event, more damage has come to the blade, rust, cracks, and tarnish all over the blade.
When wielded, the blade seems to move erattically, making it less predictable than other blades of a similar quality. However, if it comes into contact with another blade, it seems to tarnish the weapon permanently, or temporarily if the blade is magical. When hitting a creature, the seeping areas of the blade launch forth towards a target and imbue them with a dangerous poison temporarily.
Blade's Rot has been a constant thorn in my side for the past twelve years. I have to keep it in its own contained area away from other blades for fear of what that demonic sword would do if it were in a room with others. Thankfully there seems to be interest from a strange buyer to procure the blade in the north of the Daunka Province
Day Fifteen - Lace
The Woven Curtain is a thin rapier that seems to be made of a sparkling silk known as Steelsilk. The blade itself seems to peer out as a single line in the air. The hilt of the blade is made of more of this strangely sharp and strong silk that forms a lace pattern, with a guard over the hilt that while at times as soft as silk should be, also can become strong and solidify against strong blows.
The blade is said to be have been woven by Quarterion, learning the art of weaving these threads from ancient textbooks describing a powerful magic known as Manomancy in its day. While the intricacies of the magic form were lost on Quarterion, they were able to use some of the descriptions of weaving the magical strings of existence to form the Steelsilk into this beautiful but deadly blade.
When wielded, the Woven Curtain seems to thrum with magical energy, striking foes with a deft speed that is unnatural and allows for another blow to be made in the same time as a usual strike. The wielder can also launch the guard of the hit at an individual, pulling them closer to their form.
The silk itself seemed to harden to the touch, creating a difficulty in forming such a powerful material into a blade. The best method in this case was to look at the history of different magical abilities and use the ancient knowledge I had collected to form the blade itself, creating something as soft as silk and as strong as steel, leading to the moniker of the strange material.
Day Sixteen - Carved
Giant’s Rest is a large greatsword that is carved of a black basalt. Quarterion collected a hunk of a slab from a powerful set of Giants that had brought the rock up to the surface of Tokevis. It is said that Quarterion and their companions struck down a squad of the Giants in an attempt to gather enough of the stone to make the greatsword.
The blade itself is oversized for many different creatures, especially as its form was carved from the stone and sharpened to a point that would make the blade deadly even in overburdened hands. Along the blade are several runes that are said to have been found in a study of the ancient Giant society that is claimed to have walked the earth.
When wielded, the giant blade can be slammed into the ground, creating a shockwave that knocks any creature within 15 feet of the blade onto their backs. If wielded by someone with links to the barbaric rage or unstoppable forces of the world, they will find their nature to agression being empowered with an additional ferver.
The Giantfolk who were moving the stone claimed that it was to be used as the capstone of some settlement, but I knew that in taking it, I could fashion a powerful blade using the influence of the Giants themselves. Runic magic that seems to thrive among their knowledge combined with might and heft behind such a weapon would create a bane for such a large creature’s existence.
Day Seventeen - Gem
Carved from the topaz scales of an ancient dragon, Fester is a falchion that was made and challenged Quarterion’s skill. The topaz scales were found by a set of adventurers who wanted to form a falchion for their warrior. However, during the crafting of the blade, the adventuring party was wiped out by a powerful warlock, meaning the blade still remains unclaimed as it has for the past few centuries. For Quarterion, they had to discover how to manipulate the gemstone without breaking it, and still reinforcing the falchion to work despite its fragile material.
The falchion itself curves towards the point of the blade, with a cut out towards the top of the blade in the shape of a flower. The blade has an orange tint that fades towards the hilt. The hilt itself seems simple with a wrapped leather, but a powerful arcane gemstone seems to make up the pommel of the blade.
When wielded by a warrior skilled with such a weapon, they find themselve able to channel magical energy into the blade and call down a beam of decay that rots the area like a dragon’s breath. Fester also allows the wielder to inflict a small amount of necrotic energy into the target of their attacks.
While the blade was forged with great skill and difficulty, the party that were to wield it are no longer able to take it up as a result of their passing. I don’t want to let just anyone claim it, so I shall wait until another touched by the decay of a topaz comes and gathers the knowledge to take the falchion from my armory.
Day Eighteen - Beetle
The Scarab's Rest is a rita'sonesh that is focused around a powerful scarab-looking artifact that makes up the crossguard of the blade. The wings of the scarab are a beautiful decorative piece with jade panels filling the frame of each of the wings, its frame is lined with various other gemstones that emanate a strange glow. Bursting through the top of the scarabs head is a blade that seems to be made of pure light, despite the fact it curves like a rita'sonesh does. The hook of the blade seems to have a wicked point and unlike many rita'sonesh has a sharp edge on both sides.
It is said that while exploring the deep dunes of the Slycol Desert, Quarterion discovered the scarab inside of a set of ruins that were being maintained by its energy. The people of the ruins were thankful for being able to find a peace finally, so Quarterion knew that the scarab had some magical potential to help guide those to rest. Scarabs are known to appear around Kyradon as symbols of funerary rites, the idea of a natural passing from one life to the next, leading it to be linked to both Mandra and Corvina in their religion.
When wielded by most people, The Scarab's Rest seems like many other blades, with extra energy that pours itself into the wounds of anyone who is attacked by the blade. However, in the hands of someone touched by divine powers, The Scarab's Rest seems to possess additional abilities to guide those who are dead to a final rest or back to life having additional pull on the soul.
Kyradon was a strange place, this scarab seemed to call out to me, almost as if it was asking me to do something with it and give it a place of purpose. So I did, following as many traditional techniques as I could follow, I tried to make an ancient blade known as a rita'sonesh, seeing if that would help satisfy the seemingly sentient scarab. Fortunately, it seems to have channelled its energies into the blade. Given its origins, I would be intrigued to see what the blade is like.
Day Nineteen - Membrane
Created from the wings of a strange demonic bat, Pataris is a cutlass that can be fanned out like the wing of the bat's form. The blade itself is a strong black color with the membranes of the original bat flaring out to make the curve of the blade. The membrane is a white and red color that forms a strange pattern, seemingly shifting in the wind with a glaze, almost like rotted meat. The crossguard and hilt of the blade are designed to help guard against any other blades trying to cut off the hand of the wielder.
Quarterion is said to have discovered the membrane of the bat after defeating the creature in a set of travels to the mountains of the Moorbound Peaks. It is said that the powerful creature was tormenting several shepherds along the base of the mountain range, stealing from their flocks to fill their food. Quarterion and a group of other skilled hunters looked for the creature and eventually brought it down.
When wielded, Pataris seems to grant the user a limited ability to fly, a supernatural energy filling their frame. When someone is struck with the blade, the wound seems to be filled with a powerful poison that sears away at the wound for at least a day. Additionally, it seems that once per day, the wielder can use the wing to cause a powerful gust of wind that flares against creatures in a line in front of the attack.
The wings of the creature seem to form a metallic structure, the membrane itself knitting the structure into essentially the shape of a cutlass. I want to find a way to develop this into a blade that will actually strike harder than a steel blade. The barbs at the end of the wings sections might even make a serrated blade.
Day Twenty - Vapor
There are some blades that Quarterion created just to see if they were able to create it. The Spirit Blade was an attempt to create a devout weapon to the worship of Corvina, in doing so, Quarterion created a shortsword that has a censer attached to its pommel by the chain. The blade itself seems to burn with the same incense as it is lined with small holes on the flat part of the blade. Though when incense is burned inside the censer, the vapors emitting from the blade are a ghostly green, leading to the blade's moniker.
When wielded, the person gains access to a mote of divine power. While activated with incense, wounds dealt with the blade seem to reverberate through the mind of the target. The blade itself seems to crave the destruction of undead creatures, leading to the blade dealing additional damage to such creatures. The blade can also be used as a ranged weapon, leading to the Spirit Blade having a further reach than most weapons of its ilk.
A powerful combination of a religious artifact like a censer and a sword seems like a great symbol of worship to Raven's Blood. However, the blade itself seems to feel a craving for the undead creatures of the worlds. I wonder if even now, such a longing is the divine blessing onto the blade, wanting it to enact the will of the goddess. I shall keep an eye on the blade in the days coming.
